A Practical Guide to Choosing a MicroSD Card for a Phone or Camera

The right microSD card isn't necessarily the fastest, largest, or most expensive one. Start with what the device supports
Before comparing cards, check the phone or camera’s manual, manufacturer support page, or specifications. Some devices accept microSD cards only up to a stated capacity. Others support a wide range but require a particular speed class for certain recording modes. Phones may also restrict how a card can be used: portable storage is useful for files and media, while adoptable storage, where supported, integrates the card more closely with the phone and can make removing it less convenient.
The card family matters too. microSDHC generally covers cards from 4GB through 32GB, while microSDXC covers 64GB through 2TB under the SD standard. Newer microSDUC cards go beyond that range, but a device must explicitly support the format and capacity. A card that physically fits the slot can still be incompatible with the device’s software, file system, or capacity limit.
Check your device’s ceiling: Before buying, confirm the maximum supported capacity, card type, and required recording class in the current manual or manufacturer specifications. If the device is older, don't assume that a newer, higher-capacity card will work simply because its dimensions match.
Capacity is the easiest specification to understand, but it is also easy to overbuy. UHS Speed Class uses U1 or U3, where U3 indicates a higher minimum sequential write requirement than U1. Video Speed Class uses V6, V10, V30, V60, or V90. The number in these markings refers to a minimum sustained write-speed category under the relevant testing conditions, not a promise that every operation will run at that speed.
For many phones, a reputable Class 10 or U1 card is enough for photos, music, documents, and ordinary video. A camera recording demanding 4K video may require U3 or V30, while higher-bitrate modes can call for V60 or V90. The camera’s manual should take priority because its requirement depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Buying a V90 card for a device that needs V30 won't improve footage if the camera can't use the extra performance.
You may also see UHS-I or UHS-II, which describes the card’s bus interface rather than its storage capacity. A UHS-II card can usually be used in a UHS-I slot, but it will operate at the slower interface’s limits. UHS-II microSD cards are less common and may cost more, so they are worth considering only when the device explicitly benefits from that interface.
The advertised read speed is often the most prominent number on a package. It affects copying files off the card, but recording depends more directly on sustained write performance. A card advertised as very fast for reading isn't automatically suitable for demanding video capture.
Decide whether endurance matters
For a phone used mainly for photos, apps, and occasional downloads, a standard card from a reputable manufacturer is usually the simplest choice. For a dashcam, security camera, action camera, or another device that writes continuously and overwrites old files, look for a card specifically marketed for high or maximum endurance. These cards are designed for heavier write workloads than ordinary consumer storage.
Endurance labels aren't a universal speed class, and they don't make a card indestructible. They also don't replace backups. Continuous recording creates more wear than taking occasional photos, and heat, power interruptions, and frequent rewriting can affect reliability. If important footage is stored on the card, copy it to another location rather than treating the card as a permanent archive.
For a conventional stills camera, endurance is usually less important than meeting the camera’s sustained write requirement and using a card you can replace without losing too much work. A second card can be a useful form of risk reduction, particularly on a long trip or at an event.
Treat phone and camera choices differently
A phone generally benefits from enough capacity for its media habits and good everyday reliability. If you will store downloaded video, large games, or a growing photo library, capacity may matter more than extreme sequential speed. App performance can be influenced by the card’s Application Performance Class, marked A1 or A2, but the result depends on the phone, operating system, card reader, and how the card is configured. An A2 label isn't a guarantee that every phone will deliver A2-level performance.
A camera’s key question is different: can the card keep up while the camera is writing? Stills photographers should consider burst depth and how quickly the camera clears its buffer. Video users should match the card to the camera’s exact recording mode. If the manual says V30, buying at least V30 from a trustworthy source is more meaningful than choosing a card with a large read-speed number.
In both cases, faster cards can make file transfers more pleasant, but the host device remains part of the system. A fast card in an older phone, inexpensive reader, or slow camera may not perform at its advertised maximum.
Avoid counterfeit cards and misleading deals
Counterfeit memory cards are a practical risk, especially when an unfamiliar seller offers an unusually large capacity at a surprisingly low price. A fake card may report the advertised capacity while actually containing much less storage. It can appear to work until new files overwrite older data or the card reaches its real limit.
Buy from the device manufacturer, a well-established retailer, or a seller with a clear return process. Inspect the packaging and card for poor printing, inconsistent branding, or specifications that don't make sense together, but remember that appearance alone can't prove authenticity. After purchase, test a new card before trusting it with important recordings. Capacity and write/read verification tools can expose a card that reports more storage than it really has, although testing takes time and should be done with the card empty.
Keep the receipt and avoid making the card your only copy of valuable photos. A warranty may help with a failed product, but it can't recover irreplaceable files or recreate a missed recording.

- Buy through a reliable channel: Prefer authenticity, returns, and warranty support over the lowest price.
If you are unsure, a reputable 128GB or 256GB microSDXC card that meets the device’s stated speed requirement is often a sensible starting point for general use. Camera owners should prioritize the recording specification; phone owners should prioritize compatibility, capacity, and dependable everyday performance. In either case, format the card in the device when the manufacturer recommends it, eject or unmount it before removal, and keep important files backed up elsewhere.
The best microSD card is the one whose capacity you will use, whose sustained speed your device can actually accept, and whose source you can trust. Once those essentials are covered, paying for a higher class or larger capacity is worthwhile only when it solves a specific need.
