Why an App Opens Links in the Wrong Browser
The browser an app uses can depend on system defaults, app-specific choices, and workplace controls rather than one universal setting. I’ll show how those layers fit together on Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone so you can change the right one.
When an app opens a link in the “wrong” browser, the browser itself usually isn’t malfunctioning. The link may be following your operating system’s default, an app’s own preference, an embedded browser setting, or a restriction applied by an organization. The useful first step is identifying which layer is making the decision.
Start by identifying what actually opens
Tap a link and look closely at the result. If the full browser app opens, the operating system probably handled the link. If the page appears inside the original app—with a smaller toolbar, an in-app back button, or no normal browser tabs—the app may be using an embedded browser window instead.
That distinction matters. Changing the default browser generally affects links handed to the operating system, but it may not change an app that deliberately displays web pages inside itself. Some apps offer a setting such as Open links externally, Use in-app browser, or Open web links in. Others provide no choice at all.
It’s also possible for different links to behave differently. A regular web address may follow the default browser, while a sign-in link, document link, or link associated with a particular app may use a special handler. Test more than one link before assuming the behavior is universal.
Check the setting names on your device: Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone can change menu labels and locations between versions. Use the operating system’s Settings search for “default browser” or “default apps” if the path below doesn’t match what you see.
Windows: change the default browser or specific link types
On Windows, the usual control is the default-app assignment for web links. Open Settings, choose Apps, and then open Default apps. Select the browser you want to use, or search for the browser and assign it as the default for web-related link and file types when Windows presents those choices.
Depending on the Windows version and the browsers installed, you may see separate entries for protocols such as HTTP and HTTPS, along with file types such as .html. For ordinary web links, the important assignments are generally the web protocols. If one browser is still opening some links, check whether those entries point to different browsers.
Windows can also show a prompt when you click a link and ask which app should open it. If you select an option to always use a particular app, that choice can become part of the default-app configuration. Changing the default browser later should normally update links that use the standard web protocols, but a particular application may still apply its own rule.
Some apps, especially messaging, email, and collaboration tools, include a preference for opening links in the system default browser or in a chosen browser. Look in that app’s general, links, or privacy settings. An app may also use an embedded web view that can't be redirected through Windows alone.
macOS: set the general default, then inspect the app
On macOS, open System Settings and look for Desktop & Dock or the setting labeled Default web browser, depending on the version of macOS. Choose the browser you want for standard web links. Older macOS versions place this control under General instead.
Once the default is changed, close and reopen the app that was opening links incorrectly. Some apps cache their browser choice while running, so testing immediately in an already-open app can make a correct setting appear ineffective.
The same limitation applies on macOS as on Windows: an app can choose to display links in an internal browser window. Check the app’s settings for a link-opening preference. If the app has no such option, you may not be able to force every link into your preferred browser without using a different app or opening the link manually.
If only certain links behave oddly, consider whether they aren't ordinary web links. File-sharing, video-conferencing, password-manager, and workplace apps may use custom links that are intended to open a companion application. Changing the default web browser may not change how those specialized links are handled.
Android: check both the default browser and app behavior
On Android, open Settings and search for Default apps or Default applications. Choose Browser app, then select your preferred browser. The exact menu can vary among phone manufacturers and Android versions, but Settings search is often faster than following a device-specific path.
If links from one particular app still open somewhere unexpected, inspect that app’s settings. Messaging, email, social, and news apps may offer an in-app browser option. Some Android apps also remember a previous “open with” decision. Clearing that app’s defaults, when the option is available, can make Android ask again the next time a supported link is opened.
Android may also treat links associated with a particular installed app differently. For example, a link belonging to a service might open its dedicated app rather than a browser. In an app’s Open by default, Opening links, or similarly named settings, you may be able to allow or prevent supported links from opening there. The labels and available controls differ by Android version and manufacturer.
Be careful not to clear all of an app’s storage merely to reset link behavior. Clearing storage can sign you out and remove local settings or downloaded data. If the phone offers a narrower option to reset defaults, use that first.
iPhone: change the default browser, but expect app-specific limits
On an iPhone, open Settings, select the browser you want to use, and look for Default Browser App. Choose your preferred browser. The setting is available only for browsers that support Apple’s default-browser role, and the wording can vary by iOS version.
If the link still opens inside the app where you tapped it, that app is probably using an in-app browser. Look for a share button, an option such as Open in Browser, or a setting related to opening links externally. Some apps expose this choice only after a page has loaded; others keep all links inside their own web view.
A link can also be intended to open an installed app rather than a browser. Removing or changing the associated app may alter that behavior, but it can create a different inconvenience. If your goal is simply to read a page in your preferred browser, use the app’s share or open-in-browser command when available.
When a work or school device overrides your choice
A managed computer or phone can apply browser policies that you can't change as an ordinary user. An employer or school may require links from work apps to open in an approved browser, redirect certain websites, or prevent users from changing default applications. Security software can also add its own link-handling behavior.
Signs of management include a message saying that a setting is controlled by an administrator, a browser installed by your organization, a work profile on Android, or a separate management profile on an iPhone or Mac. The device may behave differently for work accounts and personal accounts because the organization’s rules apply only within the managed environment.
In that situation, repeatedly changing the default browser is unlikely to solve the problem. Check whether the link was opened from a work-managed app or profile, then ask your organization’s support team whether the behavior is required. Avoid removing management profiles or security software simply to change link handling; doing so can disrupt access to work data and may violate your organization’s rules.
A sensible troubleshooting order
Use this order to avoid changing several settings at once:
- Determine whether the link opens a full browser or an in-app web view.
- Set the operating system’s default browser.
- Restart the app and test a normal web link.
- Inspect the app’s link or browser settings.
- Check specialized links and installed companion apps.
- Look for workplace, school, parental-control, or security restrictions.
If the problem affects every app, focus on the system default. If it affects only one app, focus on that app’s settings or its use of an embedded browser. If it affects only one category of link, investigate associated apps and link handlers instead of replacing the general browser default.
You may also want to update the affected app and browser, especially if the behavior began after an operating-system update. Updates can change menu locations or fix link-handling bugs, but they can also introduce new defaults, so retest after updating. On a phone, restarting the device is a reasonable final check; it won’t override a deliberate app or administrator policy, but it can clear a temporary handoff problem.
The practical solution is usually to correct the layer making the decision. Set the preferred browser at the system level for general links, change the app’s own preference when one exists, and treat managed-device behavior as an organizational policy rather than a broken personal setting. If an app offers no way to bypass its embedded browser, using its Open in browser command—or choosing a different app for those links—may be the most reliable option.
