What to Do When a Phone App Drains the Battery Overnight

Start with the phone’s battery report, check whether the app was active in the background, and then make one controlled change at a time. That helps you solve the problem without disabling useful security, communication, or accessibility features.

Confirm the pattern before changing anything

First, charge the phone to a known level and note the time. If possible, leave it in the same place overnight with its usual connection settings. In the morning, record the battery percentage, whether the phone felt warm, and whether it was connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service. A single unusual night may be caused by a software update, poor reception, or a temporary app error rather than a continuing fault.

Check whether the battery loss is genuinely unusual for your phone. A small decline overnight is normal because the phone continues to maintain network connections, receive messages, synchronize accounts, and perform scheduled maintenance. A large drop, repeated drain while the phone is idle, or noticeable warmth is more useful evidence of an abnormal process.

Before troubleshooting, make sure the battery reading itself isn't being misinterpreted. A phone that wasn't fully charged, was disconnected from the charger, or restarted during the night may show a misleading comparison. If the battery is swelling, the phone is unusually hot, or it smells damaged, stop using it and seek manufacturer or qualified repair advice rather than continuing with software tests.

Use the battery report to find the likely cause

On an iPhone, open Settings > Battery. The exact presentation can vary by iOS version, but the Battery screen generally shows usage by app and activity over a selected period. Look for an app with unusually high usage compared with your normal pattern, especially one showing significant Background Activity. An app that used a high percentage while you were actively using it may be demanding but not necessarily draining the phone while idle.

On Android, open Settings > Battery, then look for Battery usage, Battery usage by app, or a similar option. Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android versions. Check both the percentage attributed to the suspected app and the amount of time it was active in the background. Some phones also show whether the app was running while the screen was off.

Battery reports are clues rather than laboratory measurements. The percentages describe the phone’s estimated distribution of use, not always the exact amount of energy consumed by each app. A mobile game may appear high because you played it for an hour, while an app with a background process may appear lower but still account for most of the overnight loss. Compare the report with the time when the phone was idle.

Check the menus on your phone: Battery settings and permission names change across iOS releases, Android versions, and manufacturer interfaces. Use the current support instructions for your exact phone model if a setting mentioned here is missing or has moved.

Also look beyond individual apps. Battery screens may identify display use, mobile network activity, hotspot operation, location services, or system processes. If no app stands out, the cause may be the connection, the screen, a system task, or battery deterioration rather than one poorly behaved application.

Reduce background activity without breaking useful features

If one app is a credible suspect, begin with the least disruptive control. On iPhone, review the app under Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can turn background refresh off for that app, or disable the feature for apps that don't need to update when you aren't using them. This usually doesn't prevent an app from working when opened, though it can delay some content updates.

On Android, open the suspected app’s entry under Settings > Apps, then look for Battery, App battery usage, or a related control. Depending on the phone, you may be able to choose unrestricted, optimized, or restricted background use. Choosing a more restrictive setting can reduce drain, but it may delay notifications, location updates, uploads, backups, or other background tasks.

Use restriction selectively. Messaging, calling, navigation, health, security, smart-home, and accessibility apps may need background access to perform their main functions. If you restrict one of these, test the features you depend on before assuming the problem is solved. A phone that saves battery by silently delaying an emergency alert hasn't really improved the situation.

You can also check whether the app has permission to use location in the background. Set location access to While Using or the closest equivalent when continuous background location isn't necessary. For apps that genuinely need location while the screen is off, such as navigation or safety tools, review their purpose and settings instead of removing access automatically.

Review notifications and automatic activity

Notifications can wake the phone repeatedly, keep the display active, trigger network transfers, and encourage an app to perform additional synchronization. Review the suspected app’s notification categories and turn off alerts that aren't useful. You may be able to keep direct messages while silencing promotional, recommendation, or marketing notifications.

Don't assume every notification is the same. A time-sensitive call, security warning, medication reminder, or two-factor authentication prompt may be worth keeping. The goal is to remove unnecessary activity, not to make the phone silent at the cost of missing something important.

Within the app itself, look for settings related to automatic video playback, frequent synchronization, cloud uploads, nearby-device scanning, high-accuracy location, or continuous status updates. These options can create background work even when the operating system’s battery report doesn't clearly identify the reason.

Update the app and the phone

A sudden change often follows an app update, operating-system update, account change, or new device permission. Check the app store for an available update and install it through the normal store process. App developers sometimes correct battery-intensive bugs in later releases, although an update can occasionally introduce a new problem as well.

Also check for a phone software update when one is available and appropriate for your device. Keep the phone connected to power and a reliable network during the update, and allow time afterward for indexing, synchronization, or other one-time work to finish. Battery use may temporarily rise after a major system update, so judge the result over more than one idle period.

If the drain began immediately after an update, note the app version and phone software version. That information is useful if you need to contact the developer or manufacturer. Avoid downloading unofficial “battery fixer” apps that promise to repair the problem by running more background services; they can add notifications, tracking, or additional drain.

Test with a restart, then reinstall selectively

A restart is a reasonable low-risk test when an app or system service may be stuck. Close the relevant work if necessary, restart the phone using its normal power controls, and observe the next overnight period. Don't repeatedly force-close every app as a routine battery strategy. Modern phones manage background processes themselves, and constant manual closing can make some apps use more power when they reopen.

If the app still appears responsible, back up or synchronize any important data before removing it. Confirm that you know the login details and that the app’s information is stored in an account or another safe location. Uninstall and reinstall only the suspected app rather than several apps at once. Then restore only the permissions and optional features you actually need.

Reinstallation is most useful when the app’s local data or installation has become corrupted. It isn't a guarantee of a fix, and it may erase offline downloads, drafts, locally stored media, or settings. If the drain returns as soon as you sign back in or enable a particular feature, that feature or account synchronization may be the more relevant cause.

When the app probably isn't the main problem

If battery usage is spread across many apps, examine the phone’s environment. Weak cellular reception can make the phone work harder to maintain a connection, particularly in a basement, rural area, or building with heavy signal blocking. Overnight testing in a location with reliable Wi-Fi can help distinguish a network problem from an app problem.

Check whether the screen stayed on, the phone was acting as a hotspot, Bluetooth devices were repeatedly reconnecting, or a backup was running. A recently connected wearable, vehicle system, or smart accessory can also create repeated activity. If the phone loses charge even in airplane mode with the screen off, an app or network connection becomes less likely, though alarms and some local functions may still run.

Battery health matters too. Older batteries hold less energy and may show a larger percentage decline from the same amount of activity. If the phone shuts down unexpectedly, reports a service warning, becomes hot during light use, or drains rapidly regardless of the app, use the manufacturer’s battery-health information or arrange an inspection. Don't puncture, bend, freeze, or attempt to open a swollen battery.

A sensible order for the next test

Start by recording the overnight loss and reading the battery report. Then reduce background activity or unnecessary notifications for the strongest suspect, restart the phone, and test again under similar conditions. If the result is unchanged, update the app and phone, inspect network and system activity, and reinstall the app only after protecting its data.

If the battery report continues to implicate the same app, report the issue to its developer with the app version, phone model, operating-system version, and a description of when the drain occurs. If no app accounts for the loss, focus on reception, accessories, system updates, and battery health. This measured process is slower than switching on every battery-saving option, but it is more likely to preserve the features you use while identifying the problem that actually needs fixing.
