What privacy settings matter most on a new laptop

You don’t need to disable everything or memorize every setting. Start with the controls that limit access to sensitive information, then adjust convenience features such as location, cloud syncing, and personalized recommendations according to how you use the computer.
Start with the settings that limit access
The most important privacy settings are usually permissions. They determine which apps can use your camera, microphone, location, contacts, files, notifications, and other data. On Windows, look for Privacy & security in Settings. On macOS, open System Settings and choose Privacy & Security. The names and layout can change between operating-system versions, but the basic idea is the same: review access by category and by app.
Begin with the camera and microphone. Leave access off unless you need it, and allow it only for apps you recognize and use. A video-calling app may need both; a calculator or simple game usually doesn't. You can often disable broad access while allowing selected apps, though some systems separate permission for desktop applications from permission for apps installed through the operating system’s app store.
File and folder access deserves similar attention. An app that can read your documents, downloads, photos, or desktop may be able to view information you never intended to share with it. Give this permission only when the app’s purpose clearly requires it. If a photo editor needs access to a chosen picture, that doesn’t automatically mean it needs access to your entire documents folder.
Location access is less urgent on a stationary desktop than on a phone, but it can still reveal where the laptop is being used. Turn it off if you don’t need map, weather, local-search, or location-based features. If you leave it on, limit it to apps that provide a clear benefit.
Check your laptop’s permission categories: Open your operating system’s privacy settings after setup and review camera, microphone, location, files, contacts, and notifications one at a time. Current Windows and macOS releases may use different labels or place desktop-app controls in separate sections, so follow the wording shown on your screen rather than an older online tutorial.
Reduce diagnostics without breaking useful support
Operating systems collect diagnostic information to identify crashes, bugs, compatibility problems, and performance issues. Some basic data may be necessary for core updates or support, while optional diagnostic data can include more information about how features are used. The exact categories differ between Windows, macOS, and other systems.
Choose the minimum diagnostic or analytics level that still lets the laptop receive updates and report serious problems. Avoid disabling security updates or system protections in an attempt to stop all data collection. Those functions aren't the same as optional usage analytics, and turning them off can leave the computer less reliable or less secure.
You may also see choices about sending optional crash reports, typing or handwriting data, voice recordings, or diagnostic information tied to specific apps. Read the explanation beside each switch. A setting that promises to improve speech recognition, for example, may involve sending voice or usage data to the provider. If you rarely use the feature, declining the extra collection is a reasonable minimalist choice.
Some diagnostic controls are designed to improve the manufacturer’s products rather than provide a direct benefit to you. That doesn’t make them automatically bad, but it does make them optional from a privacy perspective. Select the least invasive option first; you can always enable additional reporting later when troubleshooting a specific problem.
Turn off advertising personalization when you don’t need it
Advertising identifiers allow apps or services to associate activity with a particular device or account for more relevant advertising. They don’t make browsing anonymous, and switching one off won’t stop all advertisements. It can, however, reduce one straightforward form of cross-app personalization.
Look for settings named advertising ID, personalized ads, ad personalization, or tracking. On Windows, this may appear under privacy settings for general permissions or advertising-related controls. On macOS, app tracking requests are generally handled in Privacy & Security, while advertising preferences may also appear in Apple account or system-related settings. Browser and individual-app settings can add another layer.
Decline permission when an app asks to track your activity across other companies’ apps or websites, unless you have a specific reason to allow it. You can also turn off personalized advertising in your account settings. Expect ads to remain; the change mainly affects how closely they are matched to your activity.
Personalization settings for search, recommendations, and cloud services are separate from advertising identifiers. You may prefer to keep recommendations enabled because they make the laptop easier to use while still limiting advertising personalization.
Protect the camera and microphone in everyday use
Permission controls are the first line of defense, but they aren’t the only one. Keep the operating system, browser, and video-calling apps updated so known security problems are more likely to be fixed. Use a physical camera shutter if the laptop has one. If it doesn’t, a purpose-made cover can help, provided it doesn’t press against the display when the lid closes.
Be careful with camera covers that are thick, adhesive, or poorly designed. They can damage a screen or prevent the lid from closing properly. A cover also does nothing for the microphone, so permission settings and a visible microphone-mute control still matter.
Review the list of apps with camera and microphone access occasionally, especially after installing unfamiliar software. Remove access from apps you no longer use, then uninstall those apps if you don’t need them. When a website requests camera or microphone access in your browser, allow it for the current task only when possible, and remove the permission afterward if you won’t return to that site.
Use browser protection as a separate layer
Your laptop’s privacy settings can't control every website. The browser has its own controls for tracking, cookies, pop-ups, downloads, notifications, location, camera, microphone, and saved passwords.
Keep the browser’s built-in protection enabled unless a trusted site genuinely requires an exception. Blocking known malicious sites and deceptive downloads is more important than making every page behave identically. If a site asks to send notifications, say no unless you specifically want alerts; unwanted notifications are usually unnecessary and can make deceptive messages look more convincing.
Review saved passwords and autofill information. A password manager can make unique passwords practical, but you should protect it with a strong primary password and, where available, multifactor authentication. Don’t save payment details or addresses in the browser simply because the prompt appears. Convenience is useful, but it’s optional.
Private or incognito browsing is often misunderstood. It generally prevents the browser from retaining local history, cookies, and form data after the private window closes. It doesn't make you invisible to websites, your employer or school network, your internet provider, or services where you sign in. Use it for reducing local traces on a shared laptop, not as a complete privacy system.
Secure the account that controls the laptop
Account recovery is a privacy setting in the broader sense: if someone takes over your main account, they may reach email, files, purchases, backups, and device-management controls. A strong password and multifactor authentication usually matter more than obscure operating-system switches.
Use a password that is unique to the laptop account or the associated Microsoft, Apple, or other provider account. A long passphrase is easier to remember than a short, complicated password reused elsewhere. Turn on multifactor authentication using an authenticator app, security key, or another method you trust. Text-message codes can be useful when better options aren’t available, but they aren't the strongest choice for every account.
Add recovery methods while you still have access. Confirm that your recovery email and phone number are current, and save backup codes somewhere safe but separate from the laptop. If the computer is lost, a recovery method you can access from another device may be the difference between quickly regaining control and being locked out.
Keep a separate everyday account from an administrator account when your operating system supports that arrangement and you’re comfortable managing it. Administrative access allows software and system changes that a standard account may block. This won’t prevent every attack, but it can reduce the consequences of casually approving an untrusted installer.
Confirm your recovery route: Before relying on the new laptop, sign in to the account-management page from a trusted device and check the recovery email, phone number, multifactor method, and backup codes. Providers change their menus and available options, so use the current account-security page rather than assuming every laptop has the same recovery controls.
Decide what to do with cloud syncing
Cloud backup and synchronization can protect your files if the laptop fails, but they also place copies of those files in an online account. That is a trade-off, not a simple privacy win or loss.
Enable syncing for information you genuinely need across devices, such as contacts, browser bookmarks, or ordinary working documents. Be more selective with sensitive files, private photos, tax records, or documents containing identity information. Check whether a service synchronizes an entire Desktop or Documents folder automatically; many users enable this without realizing how broad the backup becomes.
If you use cloud storage, protect the account with a unique password and multifactor authentication. Understand whether deleted files remain in a recovery bin and how long the provider retains them. The retention period, storage limits, and available privacy controls can change, so check the provider’s current documentation if those details affect your decision.
A minimalist setup that works for most people
For a straightforward starting point, deny camera, microphone, location, contacts, and broad file access unless an app has a clear reason to use them. Turn off optional diagnostics and personalized advertising, keep security updates and browser protection enabled, and reject unnecessary website notifications. Then secure the main account with a unique password, multifactor authentication, and working recovery methods.
You don’t have to inspect every privacy choice on the first day. Use the laptop normally for a week, notice which features are inconvenient without access, and grant permissions only when a real need appears. Revisit the permissions list after installing a major app or operating-system update. That small amount of maintenance is more useful than changing every setting once and forgetting where things stand.
The goal isn’t to make the laptop incapable of sharing information. It’s to make sharing deliberate. Limit access to sensitive hardware and files, separate optional personalization from necessary security, and make sure your account can be recovered without exposing more information than you intend.
