How to Secure a Home Router After Moving Into a New Apartment
A newly rented apartment often comes with an unfamiliar router, default settings, and a growing list of devices to connect. I’ll explain how to secure the network in a sensible order, with maintenance habits that keep it reliable after move-in day.
Moving into a new apartment often means inheriting a home network you didn’t set up. The router may belong to your internet provider, a previous tenant may have configured it, or it may be a new device still using default credentials. Before connecting televisions, laptops, cameras, smart speakers, and other household equipment, take time to establish who controls the network and how it’s protected.
The goal isn’t to make your network complicated. It’s to remove unknown settings, close unnecessary access, and create a small maintenance routine you can continue after the boxes are gone.
Start by identifying the equipment and its administrator
Find the device that provides Wi-Fi and connects to your internet service. In some apartments, this is a single router. In others, the internet provider supplies a modem-router gateway, while you add a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system. You may also find an Ethernet wall outlet connected directly to building-managed equipment.
Look at the router’s label, its setup app, and your internet provider’s documentation. Record the model and hardware revision, but don’t publish or share the device’s serial number, Wi-Fi password, or administrator credentials. If the router was left by a previous tenant, treat every setting as unknown and reset it according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than simply changing the Wi-Fi name.
A factory reset usually requires holding a recessed button for a specified number of seconds while the router is powered on. It erases custom settings, including the previous administrator password, Wi-Fi configuration, port forwarding rules, and sometimes the internet connection details. If the router is supplied by your provider, check how a reset affects activation or support before proceeding. Some services require provider-specific settings or credentials.
If you rent the apartment with internet included, ask the landlord or service provider who is responsible for the router. You should be able to change your own Wi-Fi password and control the devices on your private network. You may not be allowed to alter building-wide networking equipment, and attempting to reset it could disconnect other residents.
Confirm the router’s current control path: Before resetting or changing settings, verify whether the device is yours, provider-managed, or part of the building’s shared network. Use the manufacturer’s or internet provider’s current support instructions for the exact reset and login process.
Replace administrator credentials first
The administrator account controls the router itself, which makes it more important than the Wi-Fi password. Anyone who can log in as an administrator may be able to change the wireless password, redirect traffic, create remote access, or alter other security settings.
Open the router’s local management page or official mobile app. Common local addresses include 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1, but the correct address varies. Use the address shown by the router’s documentation or network settings rather than guessing repeatedly. Change the default administrator username if the router allows it, and create a long, unique password that you don’t reuse elsewhere.
A password manager is useful here because you may rarely type this credential after setup. Keep it separate from the Wi-Fi password. The Wi-Fi password is shared with household members and guests; the administrator password should be reserved for people who manage the network.
If the router supports separate administrator accounts, give each trusted administrator an individual account instead of sharing one login. That makes it easier to remove access later. Turn on multi-factor authentication for the router’s account or management app when it’s offered, particularly if the account can manage the router over the internet.
Update the router’s firmware
Firmware is the software built into the router. Updates can correct security problems, improve compatibility, and fix reliability issues. A router that works well today can still need an update because new vulnerabilities may be discovered after it was manufactured.
Check the router’s administration page or official app for its current firmware version and update mechanism. Some models download updates automatically; others require you to approve an update or upload a file from the manufacturer. Use only official sources and confirm the exact model and hardware revision before installing anything.
During an update, the router may restart and disconnect every device. Don’t unplug it unless the manufacturer specifically tells you to. Afterward, verify that your Wi-Fi name, password, internet connection, and important settings still work. If automatic updates are available, enable them if they’re appropriate for your model and service arrangement. Otherwise, set a recurring reminder to check for firmware updates several times a year.
Check support for your exact model: Firmware menus and update policies change over time. Confirm the latest supported firmware, automatic-update behavior, and any provider restrictions on the manufacturer’s current support page before updating.
An older router that no longer receives security updates is a long-term liability, even if its wireless signal seems strong. Replacing it may be more sensible than trying to compensate with extra settings. If it belongs to your provider, ask whether a supported replacement is available.
Choose a current Wi-Fi security mode
In the wireless security settings, choose WPA3-Personal when all of your important devices support it. WPA2-Personal using AES, often shown as WPA2-PSK (AES), remains a common compatibility choice for older devices. Avoid WEP, WPA, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes that include outdated encryption, and open networks for normal household use.
Some routers offer a WPA2/WPA3 transition mode. This can help older and newer devices share a network, but it provides less uniform protection than WPA3-only. Use transition mode when compatibility requires it, then revisit the setting as you replace older equipment. Don’t confuse the encryption mode with the Wi-Fi name; the name identifies the network, while the security mode determines how connections are protected.
Create a Wi-Fi password that is long enough to resist guessing and easy enough for you to enter correctly. A sequence of several unrelated words can work well. Don’t use your apartment number, street name, phone number, router model, or a password used for email or financial accounts. Changing the network name is optional, but removing a default name can make it less obvious which router model you use.
If the router has a setting for WPS, disable it unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to use it. WPS can simplify pairing, but the exact implementation varies and some older methods have security weaknesses. It’s usually safer to add devices through their normal Wi-Fi setup process.
Disable management from the internet
Remote management allows an administrator to reach the router’s control panel from outside the home network. It can be useful for managed support, but it also exposes a valuable login point to the wider internet. For a typical apartment network, turn off remote administration unless you genuinely need it.
Look for settings named Remote Management, Remote Administration, Web Access from WAN, or similar. Also review whether management is allowed through HTTP, HTTPS, a vendor cloud account, or a dedicated app. The labels differ between routers, so read the description before changing a setting. If your internet provider requires remote access for support, ask what is enabled and whether it can be limited to support windows or specific methods.
Disabling remote management doesn’t prevent you from managing the router while connected to your home Wi-Fi. It simply removes an outside route to the administration interface. If you do need remote access, use the provider’s or manufacturer’s documented secure method, keep multi-factor authentication enabled, and avoid opening a management port manually.
Set up guest access thoughtfully
A guest network separates visitors from your main household network. Put phones and laptops belonging to guests on it rather than giving them the primary Wi-Fi password. Use a different network name and password, and enable the option that prevents guests from accessing local devices or the router’s administration page.
Guest access is also useful for devices you don’t fully trust or that don’t need to communicate with your computers. A smart plug, inexpensive streaming device, or appliance may need internet access but not access to shared files, printers, or other smart-home equipment. A guest network can reduce the consequences if one of those devices is compromised.
Isolation isn’t universal. Some routers let guest devices reach one another, while others block that traffic. Some guest networks also limit local discovery, which can stop a printer or casting device from appearing. Test the behavior with a spare device, and use the main network when a device genuinely needs local communication and comes from a source you trust.
Inventory devices as you connect them
Open the router’s connected-device list and give each known device a recognizable name. “Living room TV” and “Avery’s laptop” are more useful than a string of letters and numbers. Note which devices are yours, which belong to roommates, and which are temporary visitors.
An inventory helps you notice unexpected connections and makes troubleshooting easier. If an unfamiliar device appears, don’t assume it’s an attacker: it could be a phone with a private Wi-Fi address, a game console, a printer, or a device using a manufacturer name you don’t recognize. Compare its connection time and hardware address with the device’s own network settings before taking action.
If you still can’t identify a device, change the Wi-Fi password and reconnect known equipment one at a time. This is disruptive, but it removes old access and reveals which devices need attention. Delete stale entries from the router’s list when the interface allows it, while remembering that some routers show historical devices as well as currently connected ones.
Review the settings that affect long-term reliability
Turn off features you don’t use, especially port forwarding, universal plug and play (UPnP), and exposed services. UPnP can allow applications to request network openings automatically. It supports convenient features such as gaming and media sharing, but it also reduces your control over which devices create inbound access. If a particular application needs it, check whether you can create a narrower manual rule instead.
Review DNS settings, firewall settings, and IPv6 settings without changing them casually. The safest choice depends on your provider, router, and devices. If you use a custom DNS service, understand what it does and keep a record of why you selected it. If IPv6 is active, make sure the router’s IPv6 firewall is enabled; disabling IPv6 blindly can create connectivity problems without improving security.
Place the router in a reasonably open, dry location where it can receive airflow. Keep it away from obvious interference sources and avoid hiding it inside a tightly enclosed cabinet. Reliable ventilation and stable power help prevent the intermittent failures that are often mistaken for security problems.
Build a small maintenance routine
Once the initial setup is complete, maintenance can be simple. Check for firmware updates periodically, review the connected-device list when something changes, and remove old devices when roommates move out or equipment is discarded. Change the Wi-Fi password when you no longer trust who has it, rather than changing it on an arbitrary schedule that encourages weak passwords.
Keep a private record of the router model, support contact, administrator credentials, important custom settings, and the date of the last firmware check. Don’t store that information in a shared note or send it through an unsecured message. If the router supports configuration backups, save one after a stable setup and protect the backup like a password because it may contain sensitive network details.
A secure apartment network doesn’t require every advanced feature. Start with control of the router, a unique administrator password, supported firmware, strong Wi-Fi encryption, disabled unnecessary remote access, sensible guest isolation, and a device inventory. Those choices give you a known baseline; regular reviews keep that baseline from quietly becoming outdated.
