What to do when a Windows or Mac computer wakes up by itself
A computer that wakes overnight can waste power, interrupt sleep, or make you suspect a fault. I’ll show you how to identify whether network activity, scheduled tasks, accessories, or power settings are responsible on Windows or Mac.
A computer that turns itself on—or wakes while you’re asleep—can waste electricity, spin up noisy fans, and leave you wondering whether something is failing. The cause is often less dramatic: a maintenance task, network request, connected accessory, or power setting is allowed to wake the system.
The most efficient fix is to identify what kind of wake is happening before changing settings. A display that lights briefly is different from a computer that fully resumes, and a machine that starts from a completely shut-down state may not be waking at all.
First, identify what “waking” means
Put the computer to sleep and note exactly what happens. Does the screen turn on while the computer remains quiet? Do fans start and the operating system become usable? Does the computer wake only when a charger, dock, mouse, or external drive is connected? These details narrow the search.
A brief screen flash or a notification sound can come from a peripheral or network activity. A full wake is more likely to involve a scheduled task, a wake timer, a maintenance feature, or a device with permission to bring the computer out of sleep. If the computer is powering on after being shut down, check startup settings, power-button behavior, and automatic restart settings rather than focusing only on sleep.
Also consider whether the computer is actually sleeping. A laptop with its lid open may dim the display without entering sleep, while some desktops use a low-power display state that looks like sleep. Check the operating system’s power menu and wait long enough to confirm that the computer enters its intended sleep mode.
Check your system’s current labels: Settings and Control Panel names change between Windows releases and macOS versions. Use the power, sleep, energy, network, and device sections that match your installed version instead of relying on an identical menu path.
Check the most common wake sources
Network activity
Network access is a frequent reason for unexpected wakes. A computer may be configured to remain reachable for file sharing, remote access, updates, backups, or other maintenance. On some systems, a wired Ethernet connection can wake the computer even when Wi-Fi doesn't, and a dock may provide a separate network adapter with its own behavior.
On Windows, inspect the active power plan’s advanced settings for sleep and wake-timer options. Network adapters may also have a Power Management tab in Device Manager with options such as allowing the device to wake the computer. If you don’t use remote access or network-based wake features, disabling that permission can reduce unnecessary wake-ups without changing other sleep behavior.
On a Mac, open the relevant Battery or Energy Saver settings and look for options related to network access, Power Nap, or waking for network access. The exact options depend on the Mac model, power source, and macOS version. If you use a Mac as a file server or need remote access while it sleeps, turning these features off may solve the wake problem but remove that capability.
Scheduled tasks and wake timers
Windows can use wake timers to run maintenance, updates, backups, or other scheduled jobs. Open the advanced power settings for the current plan and review the Sleep section for “Allow wake timers.” Setting this to disabled prevents many scheduled tasks from waking the computer, although the task itself may still run the next time the computer is awake.
If you want to find the specific task instead of disabling the general permission, check Task Scheduler. Tasks that include a condition such as “Wake the computer to run this task” deserve attention. Automatic maintenance and backup software can also create or modify scheduled tasks, so look beyond the task names supplied with Windows.
Windows provides command-line clues as well. In an administrator Command Prompt, powercfg /lastwake can report the most recent wake source, while powercfg /waketimers can list active wake timers. These commands may not identify every cause, but they can save time when the computer wakes repeatedly.
Mac computers can schedule startup or wake events through system power settings. Depending on the macOS version, these controls may appear in Battery, Energy Saver, or a separate scheduling panel. Backup software, management tools, and system maintenance can also request wake time. Review scheduled power events and any application that performs overnight work.
USB devices, Bluetooth, and docks
A mouse that moves slightly, a keyboard receiving a signal, a flaky USB device, or a dock reconnecting can wake a computer. Wireless receivers are particularly easy to overlook because the device may be several feet away or sitting on a desk that gets bumped. Bluetooth keyboards and mice can produce similar results.
Disconnect accessories in a controlled order rather than unplugging everything at once. Start with docks, hubs, external drives, USB receivers, game controllers, and printers. Put the computer to sleep after each change and observe whether the behavior stops. If one accessory is responsible, reconnect it directly to the computer, update its firmware or driver if appropriate, and test it again.
On Windows, Device Manager can show which keyboards, mice, network adapters, and other devices are permitted to wake the computer. Open a device’s properties and review its Power Management settings. Clear the option that allows the device to wake the computer when you don’t need that function. A device may regain the permission after a driver or system update, so recheck it if the problem returns.
Mac users generally have fewer per-device wake controls exposed in the interface. Test by disconnecting accessories, changing the dock or hub, and checking whether the wake occurs only when Bluetooth devices are nearby. A different cable or direct connection can also reveal whether a dock is repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting.
Use a process of elimination before changing everything
Start by writing down when the wakes occur. A consistent time suggests a scheduled task or maintenance event. Wakes that happen when another device joins the network suggest network access. Wakes that follow movement at the desk, a dock connection, or a peripheral notification point toward hardware.
Next, disconnect nonessential accessories and turn off network wake features temporarily. If the computer stays asleep, restore one setting or device at a time. This takes longer than changing every power option at once, but it preserves useful functions and makes the eventual fix easier to understand.
If the computer wakes only while plugged in, compare its behavior on battery power. Many operating systems expose different sleep and maintenance choices for battery and AC power. A setting that is sensible for overnight maintenance while connected to a charger may be wasteful when the computer is running from a battery.
You can also check system logs when the cause remains unclear. Windows Event Viewer may record power-transition and wake events under system-related logs. macOS includes Console and power-management information that can help identify wake reasons, though the entries may be technical. Look for repeated timestamps and source names rather than trying to interpret every message.
Settings worth changing—and those worth keeping
If you never use remote access, wake-on-LAN, scheduled overnight backups, or network file sharing, disabling network wake features is usually a reasonable efficiency improvement. If you do rely on one of those functions, narrow the change instead: disable wake permission for an unused adapter or configure the backup to run while the computer is already awake.
Wake timers are useful when you intentionally schedule maintenance or recording. Disabling every timer may prevent a task from running at its preferred time, not necessarily eliminate the task. Review the task first when you need scheduled backups, updates, or other overnight work.
Peripheral wake is convenient for a desktop that you want to resume with a keyboard or mouse. It is less useful if a sensitive mouse, wireless receiver, or unstable dock wakes the computer several times a night. Keep wake permission for the input device you actually use and remove it from devices that are unnecessary or unreliable.
Avoid treating sleep as a substitute for shutdown when troubleshooting a more serious problem. If the computer repeatedly wakes, crashes, restarts, becomes unusually hot, or shows signs of hardware instability, shut it down and investigate those symptoms separately. Updating the operating system, firmware, and device drivers may help, but updates can also alter power settings, so check the relevant options afterward.
When the computer still wakes by itself
Test sleep with the computer disconnected from its dock and external devices, with network wake features disabled, and with scheduled wake timers turned off. If it still wakes under those conditions, the operating system’s logs may identify a system process, or the issue may involve firmware, a stuck power button, a lid sensor, or a hardware fault.
For a laptop, check whether movement of the lid changes the behavior. A loose hinge, misaligned sensor, or magnetic accessory near the lid can interfere with sleep detection. For a desktop, inspect the power button and front-panel connections if the machine appears to start rather than resume. Don't open a device that is under warranty or that you’re not comfortable servicing.
The goal isn’t to disable every feature that can wake the computer. It’s to remove wake permissions you don’t use while preserving the scheduled work and input controls that are genuinely convenient. Identify whether the event is network-driven, scheduled, accessory-related, or a power-state problem; then change one relevant setting at a time and observe the result. That approach usually fixes the nuisance with less lost functionality and less wasted power.
