How to Stop a Desktop App From Launching at Every Startup
You can either disable every unfamiliar item or make a few informed changes that preserve useful features. I’ll show you where startup controls live and how to decide which apps and background services your computer actually needs.
A desktop that opens several unwanted apps every time you sign in can feel slow before you do any work. The cause is usually not one mysterious failure: apps may have added themselves to the startup list, enabled background activity, or restored their previous windows automatically.
The sensible fix is to review startup behavior rather than disable everything you don’t recognize. Removing an app from startup usually prevents it from opening automatically; it doesn’t uninstall the app or stop you from launching it later. The important distinction is knowing when you’re changing a simple startup shortcut and when you’re interfering with a service that another feature depends on.
Start with the least disruptive change
Before changing anything, make a short list of the apps that appear after you sign in. Note whether each one is merely an inconvenience or whether it provides a feature you rely on, such as cloud synchronization, password management, device controls, notifications, or automatic backups.
Also consider whether the app is actually causing the slowdown. Startup programs can add delay, consume memory, or create network activity, but a nearly full drive, an aging hard disk, pending system updates, or a large number of browser tabs may be the bigger problem. Disabling one harmless app may make startup feel cleaner without solving the underlying performance issue.
If the app is unfamiliar, search for its name before disabling it. Look for the developer, the installation location, and the feature it supports. A recognizable brand name can still have several components, so avoid relying on the name alone.
Check the menu you see: Operating-system labels and locations can change between releases. Confirm that you’re modifying startup or login items—not uninstalling the program, disabling security protection, or stopping a service needed by your hardware.
Windows: review Startup apps first
On current Windows versions, the simplest place to begin is Settings > Apps > Startup. You’ll see apps that can launch when you sign in, along with an indication of their startup impact on some systems. Turn off an app you don’t want opening automatically, then restart or sign out and back in to see whether the change helped.
You can also right-click the Start button and open Task Manager, then choose Startup apps. This view may provide more information, including the app’s publisher and a startup-impact rating. Select an item and choose Disable. That action changes automatic launching; it doesn’t remove the application.
Start with programs that are clearly optional: game launchers, meeting tools you use only occasionally, music players, update assistants for software you rarely use, and utilities that open a visible window without providing a feature you need immediately. If you use a cloud-storage app for ongoing synchronization, disabling its startup entry may delay syncing until you open it manually. That may be acceptable, but it’s a trade-off rather than a free performance improvement.
Some applications have their own startup setting inside their preferences. Chat programs, cloud-storage tools, game clients, and creative software commonly include options such as Launch at startup, Start with Windows, or Run in the background. If Windows shows an item that keeps returning, check the app’s own settings before assuming the operating system ignored your choice.
Be cautious with Windows services
A service is different from a startup app. Services can operate without a visible window and may handle printing, networking, encryption, hardware controls, updates, backups, or security functions. You can view them by searching for Services in Windows, but that list isn't a beginner-friendly place to experiment.
Avoid disabling a service simply because its name is unfamiliar. If a service belongs to your graphics driver, touchpad, audio hardware, backup software, security product, password manager, or network utility, disabling it can remove an important function. Even a service associated with an app you don’t use may support a separate feature.
If a program is unwanted, uninstalling it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps is usually cleaner than stopping its service manually. If you need to investigate a service, record its current setting first and search the exact service name on the software maker’s support site. Use the least invasive option: disable the app’s automatic launch before altering a background service.
macOS: check Login Items and background permissions
On recent versions of macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items. The Open at Login section lists apps that open when you sign in. Select an unwanted app and use the minus button to remove it from the list.
The same area may show apps allowed to run in the background. These entries can support notifications, cloud syncing, device utilities, update checks, menu-bar controls, or other functions even when the main app window isn’t open. Turning off background permission can have broader effects than removing an app from Open at Login, so consider what the app does before changing it.
For example, a cloud-storage utility may need background access to keep files synchronized. A printer or display utility may need it to detect devices or provide controls. An update helper may be optional, but disabling it could mean you’ll need to check for updates yourself. If you don’t recognize an entry, identify its developer and installed app first rather than treating every background item as clutter.
Some Mac apps also include a setting such as Launch at login or Start automatically in their own preferences. If an app continues to appear, look there as well. An app may be using a helper component or reopening because macOS is restoring previously open applications, which is separate from the login-items list.
When shutting down or restarting, macOS can offer an option to reopen windows when logging back in. If your concern is mainly that old windows return, clear that option rather than removing every related app from Login Items. You can also check the app’s settings for automatic window restoration.
Linux: use the desktop environment’s session settings
Linux startup controls vary because different distributions and desktop environments use different tools. On many GNOME-based systems, search for Startup Applications, Session and Startup, or a similar setting. KDE Plasma commonly provides session-management controls in System Settings, while other environments may use a desktop-specific startup utility.
The principle is the same: find entries that launch when your graphical session begins, identify optional programs, and disable only the ones you understand. If no graphical tool is available, startup entries may be stored in an autostart folder or represented by desktop-entry files. Editing those files is possible, but it’s better to use the desktop environment’s settings when you’re new to Linux.
Linux systems also use services managed by tools such as systemd. Those services can affect networking, sound, printing, storage, updates, and hardware. Don’t disable a system service merely to shorten login time. If an application is creating an autostart entry, remove or disable that application’s session setting first. For a service you don’t understand, consult the distribution or application documentation before changing it.
Which startup items should stay enabled?
There is no universal list of safe items because your setup determines what is necessary. A useful decision is based on function rather than the app’s name:
- Keep it enabled if it provides security protection, password access, required hardware controls, accessibility features, automatic backups, or synchronization you expect to run continuously.
- Consider disabling it if it only opens a window you don’t need, belongs to an occasional-use app, or duplicates a feature already provided by the operating system.
- Investigate first if it has an unfamiliar name, no clear publisher, or a connection to drivers, encryption, networking, storage, or security.
Update components deserve a middle position. They are often useful, but an update helper may not need to launch every time you sign in. If you disable one, keep the application updated through its settings or by checking the developer’s official download or update mechanism periodically. Don’t download replacement utilities from random “driver updater” or “PC cleaner” sites; these can introduce more problems than they solve.
Test changes one at a time
Disable one or two optional entries, then restart the computer or sign out and back in. Check whether the unwanted app stays closed and whether the feature you care about still works. Testing gradually makes it much easier to identify the change responsible for a new problem.
If something stops working, return to the same startup screen and re-enable the item. For a service, restore its previous setting rather than choosing a different configuration at random. If you can’t remember what you changed, Windows and macOS generally allow you to reverse startup-item changes, while Linux users should restore the original autostart entry or configuration from a backup.
After the first cleanup, review the list again when you install major software. Installers often offer a checkbox for launching at startup or running in the background. Read those options instead of accepting every default. You can also remove software you no longer use, which eliminates its startup components more completely than merely disabling them.
A tidy startup list won’t transform every slow computer, but it can reduce clutter and prevent programs from competing for memory and attention before you need them. Begin with the operating system’s startup or login controls, leave security and hardware-related services alone unless you know their purpose, and make small reversible changes. That approach gives you a cleaner sign-in without turning routine troubleshooting into a risky system overhaul.
