How to Store Technology Safely Before a Long Vacation

I’ll explain how to protect phones, computers, cameras, networking gear, and smart-home devices during a long absence, including the common mistake of leaving everything plugged in or fully charged. You’ll learn which devices to back up, unplug, secure, or keep connected.

Leaving technology at home for several weeks or months is more complicated than switching off the lights. A laptop battery can slowly discharge, a router may be needed for cameras or heating controls, and a damp storage area can damage equipment even when nobody is using it. The safest choice depends on the device, the home, and what you need to access remotely.

The goal isn't to disconnect everything automatically. It’s to reduce avoidable risks while preserving the technology that genuinely needs to remain available.

Start with a device-by-device decision

Before packing or unplugging anything, make a short inventory. Include computers, tablets, phones, cameras, game consoles, printers, televisions, external drives, chargers, network equipment, smart-home hubs, security systems, and seasonal appliances with electronic controls. Note which items contain important data, which use rechargeable batteries, and which devices must remain online.

Then place each item into one of three groups:

  • Store powered off: equipment you won’t need and can safely disconnect.
  • Leave connected: equipment required for security, remote access, environmental monitoring, or essential home systems.
  • Prepare for a controlled shutdown: devices that need a backup, software setting, or special battery treatment before they’re put away.

This approach is more useful than applying one rule to every device. A television and a smart alarm system may both be plugged into a wall, but their reasons for staying connected are very different.

Back up important data before you leave

A long absence is a good reason to create a fresh backup, but a backup is useful only if it can be restored. Copy important photos, documents, travel records, and device settings to a separate drive or a reputable cloud service. If you use a local external drive, disconnect it after the backup is complete and store it away from the computer. A backup left permanently attached can be affected by the same theft, surge, malware, or physical damage as the original files.

For especially important data, use two different backup locations. For example, keep one encrypted copy at home and another in cloud storage or at a separate location. Check that the backup contains recently changed files rather than assuming a scheduled process worked. A quick test opening a few files is worthwhile.

Phones and tablets may already synchronize photos and contacts, but synchronization isn't always the same as a recoverable backup. It can copy deletions or preserve only the most recent state. Review what your Apple, Google, Microsoft, or other account actually stores, and make sure you know the account recovery method before leaving.

If you’re taking a device with you, back it up before departure as well. Travel creates its own risks, including loss, theft, and accidental damage.

Choose a sensible charge level

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries generally benefit from being stored partly charged rather than completely empty or kept at maximum charge for a long period. For a laptop, tablet, camera, handheld console, or spare phone that will be switched off, a moderate charge—often around 40 to 60 percent—is a reasonable general target. The exact recommendation can vary by manufacturer and battery design.

Avoid storing a device when its battery is already swollen, unusually hot, damaged, or losing charge rapidly. Don't press a swollen battery back into place or keep using a device that shows signs of battery damage. Arrange appropriate repair or recycling through a qualified service or local program.

Some devices are designed to remain connected, such as certain security panels, networking systems, and smart-home hubs. For those, battery advice may be less important than reliable power and a plan for what happens during an outage. If a device has a removable battery, consult its instructions before taking it out; removing it can disable settings or tamper protection on some equipment.

Confirm the battery plan for each device: Before storing expensive or rarely used electronics, check the current manufacturer guidance for its recommended storage charge, maximum storage period, and battery-removal procedure. Advice differs between product families, so a general percentage shouldn't override the instructions for your model.

Control heat, moisture, and sunlight

Temperature and moisture are often greater long-term threats than ordinary inactivity. Don’t leave electronics in a hot attic, an unventilated shed, a vehicle, or a room that receives strong direct sunlight. Excessive heat can shorten battery life, deform plastics, and accelerate damage to displays and other components. Large temperature swings can also cause condensation when a cold device is brought into a warmer space.

Choose a dry, stable indoor location away from radiators, boilers, windows with direct sun, and areas vulnerable to leaks. Keep devices off the floor, especially in basements or ground-level rooms where minor flooding is possible. Use the original packaging if it provides padding and ventilation, but don’t seal a device in an airtight plastic bag if there’s a risk that moisture is already trapped inside.

For cameras, lenses, and other equipment used in humid climates, a proper dry cabinet or humidity-controlled storage container may be justified. Silica-gel packets can help in enclosed packaging, but they aren't a substitute for controlling a persistently damp room. Replace or recharge reusable desiccant according to its instructions.

When returning to a home with a different temperature, let cold equipment reach room temperature before turning it on. This reduces the chance of powering a device while condensation is present.

Unplug what doesn’t need power

Disconnect chargers, power adapters, televisions, printers, desktop computers, game consoles, monitors, speakers, and other equipment that won’t be used. Unplugging removes standby consumption and reduces exposure to electrical surges while the home is unattended. It also prevents a failed adapter or aging component from remaining energized for weeks.

Use the device’s normal shutdown process first, particularly for computers, network-attached storage, and external drives. After it has finished shutting down, unplug it from the wall and from connected accessories. Labeling cables or photographing the setup can make reconnection much easier when you return.

A surge protector can reduce damage from some electrical events, but it isn't a guarantee against every surge, outage, or lightning strike. For a long absence, physical disconnection is the more complete option where it is practical. Don’t unplug equipment that supports essential alarms, medical needs, heating controls, refrigeration monitoring, or other systems that require continuous operation without first understanding the consequences.

Some homes have whole-house surge protection, backup power, or local electrical requirements that change the best approach. If you’re unsure whether a particular circuit supplies an alarm, pump, freezer, or other essential system, identify it before switching anything off.

Keep remote access secure and intentional

Remote access is useful only when it is needed and tested. If cameras, smart locks, thermostats, water sensors, or network equipment must remain online, update their firmware and applications before you leave. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where available. Remove old user accounts and review which family members, property managers, or service providers still have access.

Restarting a router immediately before departure isn't a substitute for testing remote access. From a different network—such as mobile data or a trusted outside connection—confirm that you can reach the service you need. Check that notifications arrive and that a person you trust knows how to respond if a device goes offline.

Avoid exposing administrative interfaces directly to the internet unless the manufacturer or a qualified administrator has configured them appropriately. A virtual private network or manufacturer-supported remote-access method is generally preferable to opening unnecessary ports. Disable remote access for devices that don’t need it.

If the internet connection or home power fails, remote devices may stop working. Consider whether a backup connection or battery backup is worthwhile, but don’t add complexity without testing it. A small uninterruptible power supply can keep networking equipment online briefly during an outage, yet it won’t solve a prolonged service interruption or a dead broadband connection.

Protect accounts, screens, and removable equipment

Sign out of accounts on devices that will be stored or left behind, especially if visitors, contractors, or property managers may enter the home. Set a strong screen lock, encrypt the storage where the operating system supports it, and avoid leaving passwords written beside the equipment. If a device contains sensitive information and won’t be needed, powering it off is safer than leaving it idle and logged in.

Remove memory cards, USB drives, and discs if they contain private or irreplaceable data. Store them separately in a dry, clearly identified place. For portable devices that will travel with you, keep them in padded cases rather than loose luggage, and don’t leave them visible in an unattended vehicle.

Printers deserve a little attention. If you leave one for months, store paper away from humidity and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for ink or toner. Inkjet cartridges may dry out, while some printers can leak if transported carelessly. If the printer isn't needed, powering it down and disconnecting it is usually simpler.

Make the return easier

Create a short return checklist while the setup is still familiar. Record which devices were unplugged, which stayed online, where important cables are stored, and whether any batteries were removed. Don’t record passwords in an unprotected note; use a password manager or another secure method instead.

When you return, inspect equipment before powering it on. Look for moisture, corrosion, pest damage, damaged cables, swelling batteries, or unusual odors. Reconnect essential networking and security equipment first, then restore other devices one at a time. This makes it easier to identify a problem and avoids turning every stored device on simultaneously after an unknown electrical event.

The best storage plan balances risk against usefulness. Powering down and unplugging most equipment reduces heat, standby use, and electrical exposure, while a carefully limited set of connected devices can protect the home or provide remote information. Back up important data, store electronics in a stable dry environment, follow device-specific battery guidance, and test any remote-access setup before you leave. Those steps prevent the common mistake of treating every device as either completely safe to abandon or automatically necessary to keep running.
