How to Diagnose a TV That Has Sound but No Picture From One Device

Sound without a picture usually means the TV and source are communicating only partly. I’ll show you how to isolate input selection, cables, settings, copy-protection handshakes, receivers, and source faults without risking your equipment.

A TV that plays sound from one device but shows no picture can seem more serious than it is. The audio proves that at least part of the connection is working, but it doesn’t prove that the video path is correct. The fault may be as simple as a selected input, or it may involve a cable, resolution setting, receiver, or failed HDMI handshake.

The safest approach is to change one thing at a time and use another known-working device or input as a comparison. Avoid opening the TV or forcing connectors. Most diagnosis can be completed through the TV’s menus and ordinary cable swaps.

First, confirm what “no picture” means

Look closely at the screen while the affected device is playing. Is the panel completely black, or does it show a message such as “No signal,” “Unsupported signal,” or “HDCP error”? These clues narrow the problem.

If the TV’s own menus appear normally, the display panel and its basic power supply are probably functioning. If you can hear the source but the TV displays an error message, the TV is receiving at least some information from the selected input. A completely black screen with no menu, logo, or backlight may indicate a TV problem rather than a problem with one source.

Try pressing the TV remote’s Home, Menu, or Input button. If the menu appears, leave it on screen while checking the source. If the menu never appears, stop troubleshooting the external device and check the TV’s power, brightness, picture mode, and display behavior with other inputs.

Check the selected input and connection path

Start with the most common explanation: the TV is listening to the wrong HDMI input. Select the input that matches the socket used by the source device, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. Don’t rely only on the device’s name in the TV’s input list, because labels can be customized or left over from an earlier setup.

If the source connects through a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or splitter, trace the complete route:

Source device → intermediate device → TV

A source can send audio through an intermediate device while its video output is blocked, misrouted, or incompatible. Check that the receiver or soundbar is set to the source’s input and that its output is connected to the TV’s HDMI input rather than another input or an audio-only socket.

For a quick comparison, connect the source directly to the TV with a single HDMI cable. This removes the receiver, switch, splitter, and extra cable from the test. If the picture returns, restore the intermediate device later and test each part individually.

Verify the signal route: Before changing settings, identify every device between the source and TV and write down which HDMI socket each cable uses. This prevents an input-label mistake from looking like a hardware failure.

Restart the HDMI handshake safely

HDMI devices exchange information when they connect. The TV reports supported video modes, the source chooses an output format, and copy-protection information may be checked. If that exchange becomes stuck, audio may continue while video doesn't.

To reset the connection, turn off the TV and the affected source. If a receiver, soundbar, or switch is in the path, turn that off as well. Disconnect the HDMI cable from both ends, wait about a minute, then reconnect it firmly. Turn the TV on first, select the correct input, and then turn on the source. If an intermediate device is involved, add it back after a direct connection works.

This is different from repeatedly pressing buttons on the remote. The aim is to let the devices start a fresh negotiation. Don't pull a cable by its wire, and don’t force an HDMI plug into a socket at an angle.

Some devices offer settings related to HDMI control, enhanced format, deep color, or high-bandwidth copy protection. These features can improve compatibility with newer equipment but may create trouble with an older receiver, cable, or display. Leave them at their default values while diagnosing the fault. Change one option at a time only after a basic direct connection has been tested.

Test the HDMI cable and TV input

A cable can carry enough signal for audio while failing to carry stable video, especially at higher resolutions or refresh rates. A damaged plug, bent contact, loose socket, or cable that is too long for the setup can produce this symptom.

Replace the suspect cable with one that is known to work with another device. Use the shortest reasonable cable for the test and connect it directly from the source to the TV. If the picture returns, the original cable or the original connection path is the likely cause.

Then try the same source and working cable on another HDMI input on the TV. If only one TV input fails, the issue may be limited to that socket or to a setting associated with it. If every input fails with the same source but other devices work, focus on the source and its output settings.

Avoid treating expensive or specially marketed cables as an automatic solution. The important test is whether a cable works reliably for the resolution and refresh rate your equipment is using. A replacement should fit securely and be appropriate for the devices involved; it doesn’t need to be extravagant.

Lower the source’s video output temporarily

A source may be configured for a resolution, refresh rate, color format, or high-dynamic-range mode that the TV or an intermediate device can't accept. The source may still send audio because audio compatibility is less demanding than video compatibility.

If the source’s settings menu is visible on another display, connect it there and temporarily choose a conservative output: automatic resolution, a standard television resolution, and a normal refresh rate. Avoid changing several picture options at once. Once the picture works on the original TV, raise the quality settings gradually until you find the setting that causes the failure.

If the source is a computer, start with a basic display mode and check whether the operating system detects the TV. A computer may be sending its desktop to a different display, using an unsupported refresh rate, or treating the TV as a second screen that is disabled. The exact commands vary by operating system, so use the display settings built into the computer rather than downloading a repair utility.

For a game console, streaming box, disc player, or cable box, look for display or video-output settings. If the device has a documented video-reset procedure, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t guess at button combinations that could erase saved data or reset unrelated settings.

Consider copy-protection and content-specific failures

If the TV’s menus and the source’s own menus appear, but a particular movie, program, or streaming service shows a black screen, copy-protection may be involved. Protected content can fail when the TV, source, receiver, splitter, or cable doesn’t complete the required handshake.

Test an ordinary menu or an unprotected video from the same source. If menus display but protected content doesn't, connect the source directly to the TV and remove splitters, capture hardware, and older receivers from the path. Check that the source app and device software are current according to the manufacturer, but don’t assume an update will solve every connection problem.

If only one streaming app fails while other content works, the problem may be with that app, account, network service, or content rather than the HDMI connection. Restart the app and source, then compare with another title or service. For current compatibility requirements or software-specific errors, consult the device and service support pages because those details can change.

Check protected-content compatibility: If menus work but one service or movie stays black, test the source directly on the TV and check the current support information for the TV, source, receiver, and app. Requirements can vary by device and software version.

Isolate a receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter

Intermediate equipment creates more possible failure points. A receiver may pass audio from one input while its video output is assigned incorrectly. A soundbar may be connected through an HDMI port intended for audio return rather than video input. A switch may be powered off or set to a different source.

Remove one intermediate device at a time and test the source directly on the TV. If direct connection restores the picture, reconnect the equipment in stages. First connect the source to the receiver and receiver to the TV. Then select the correct receiver input and output. If the picture disappears again, check the receiver’s video-processing, output-resolution, and HDMI-format settings.

A receiver may also be configured to send video only to a particular output, such as a second display. Some equipment can route audio independently of video, which explains why sound alone may continue. Consult the model’s current manual for input assignment and HDMI-output settings rather than changing unrelated audio options.

Compare with another source device

A comparison is more useful than repeated guesses. Connect a known-working device to the same TV input and use the same cable. Then connect the suspect source to a different known-working TV or monitor if one is available.

The results usually point in a direction:

  • If another device works on the same TV input and cable, the suspect source or its output settings are more likely at fault.
  • If no device shows video on that input, the cable, input socket, or TV setting is more likely at fault.
  • If the suspect source fails on multiple displays with known-working cables, its video output may be damaged or misconfigured.
  • If the source works directly but fails through a receiver or switch, focus on that intermediate device and its compatibility settings.

Use a controlled comparison: keep the cable, input, and source settings clear in your notes. Otherwise, moving several items at once can make a temporary recovery impossible to explain.

When to stop and seek service

Stop if an HDMI socket is loose, visibly damaged, unusually hot, or smells burnt. Don’t spray liquid into the TV, insert tools into the ports, or remove the back panel. Internal televisions contain components that can retain hazardous electrical charge even after the set is unplugged.

Professional help is appropriate when the TV can't display its own menus, multiple known-working sources fail on every input, the source fails on several displays after a settings reset, or the equipment shows signs of electrical damage. If the device is under warranty, avoid repairs or modifications that could affect coverage and use the manufacturer’s support process.

The most useful information for support is the exact TV and source models, the connection path, which inputs were tested, whether menus appear, and the result of a direct connection with a known-working cable.

A sensible order for the next test

Begin by confirming the TV input and checking its menus. Then connect the source directly with a known-working HDMI cable, restart both devices, and try another TV input. If that fails, lower the source’s output settings or reset its display configuration. Only after the direct connection works should you bring a receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter back into the setup.

This sequence reduces risk because it avoids unnecessary resets, separates one fault from another, and keeps the number of variables small. Sound proves that a connection exists, but the comparison tests reveal where the video path stops working.
