If your work involves writing and browsing, you may mainly need a normal letter area, Backspace, Enter, Shift, arrow keys, and a straightforward way to reach Delete, Home, End, and Page Up and Page Down. If you edit documents, work in spreadsheets, write code, or use creative software, those navigation keys may be just as important as the letters.

Also consider keys that are easy to overlook. A full-size keyboard’s function row can be useful for brightness, media, browser, or application shortcuts. The right-side number pad is valuable for frequent numeric entry, while the navigation cluster can be helpful even when you rarely think of it. A compact keyboard that removes one of these areas may still work well, but only if its replacement is convenient.

A simple test is to look at your current keyboard for a normal week. Which keys do your fingers find without thought? Which keys do you press while looking at the screen? Those observations reveal the daily cost of downsizing better than a product diagram does.

Understand what each compact layout removes

If you only enter occasional numbers, the space savings may be worthwhile. You can also add a separate number pad when needed, although that makes the overall setup less tidy and may cost more.

Seventy-five percent: compact with a function row

A 75% keyboard usually retains the function row and arrow keys but compresses the navigation keys into a tighter vertical arrangement. Some models include a small column for Delete, Page Up, or Page Down; others place these commands on a layer or omit them.

This layout often suits people who want a noticeably smaller keyboard but still use F-keys or media shortcuts. The main adaptation isn't usually missing functionality but changed spacing. A crowded navigation area can make unfamiliar keys slower to locate, and unusual gaps around the arrow keys may affect muscle memory.

Sixty-five percent: dedicated arrows, fewer extras

A 65% keyboard generally keeps the arrow keys and removes the function row and most of the navigation cluster. Delete is often present, but Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down may require a function-layer shortcut.

This can be a sensible middle ground for a small desk if you mainly type, browse, and use occasional navigation commands. It becomes less attractive when your work depends on a visible function row or frequent document movement. Check the exact position of the right Shift, Backspace, and arrow keys as well; compact layouts sometimes shorten or relocate them.

Sixty percent: maximum savings, maximum adaptation

A 60% keyboard keeps the main typing area but normally removes the function row, arrow keys, and navigation cluster. Those keys may still exist through combinations using an Fn key, but the commands are no longer available at a glance.

This layout can be comfortable for someone who knows the relevant layers and rarely needs dedicated navigation controls. It is a more questionable choice when you switch between applications, edit long documents, use keyboard-driven software, or share the keyboard with someone who expects a conventional arrangement. The keyboard may be physically small, but the learning cost isn't.

Check the exact layout before buying: Product labels vary, so verify the key diagram, right-side modifiers, arrow keys, Delete key, and available secondary functions on the manufacturer’s current specification page. Reviews and marketplace photos can show a different revision or regional layout.

Decide whether layers will feel convenient or annoying

A layer lets one key perform another function when you hold Fn or a similar modifier. For example, the letter cluster may provide arrow keys, while number keys may provide F1 through F12. Layers aren't inherently a problem; the issue is how often you need them and whether the shortcuts are easy to remember.

Layered commands work best when they involve occasional actions with predictable positions. Pressing Fn plus a key for Page Down once in a while is different from pressing Fn plus an arrow repeatedly while editing a document. Requiring two keys can also be awkward if one hand is occupied, if you have limited reach, or if the modifier is placed somewhere unfamiliar.

Give navigation keys special attention

The arrow keys are usually the dividing line between a comfortable compact keyboard and an irritating one. If you use them often, a 65% or 75% layout may be a better choice than a 60%, even if the latter saves slightly more space.

Delete, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down deserve a separate check. They are less visible in daily typing but become important during long documents, code editing, table navigation, and selecting text. Some 65% keyboards include only Delete, while others place the remaining commands on a layer. A layout that looks complete in a product photo may still require shortcuts for half of the navigation cluster.

Function keys also have different kinds of value. They may control software commands directly, trigger debugging or development tools, or operate hardware features such as display brightness. If your operating system requires an Fn combination for these keys, check whether the keyboard supports a function-lock mode. Without one, the difference between F5 and a media command can become an everyday nuisance.

Compare wireless modes, not just the word “wireless”

Compact keyboards often support Bluetooth, a proprietary 2.4 GHz connection through a USB receiver, a wired USB connection, or some combination of these. Bluetooth is convenient for tablets, phones, and computers with available Bluetooth support. A receiver can offer a simpler desktop pairing experience and may be preferable for systems where Bluetooth access is inconsistent. Wired mode avoids battery management and pairing entirely.

Multi-device switching is useful when you move between a personal computer, work laptop, and tablet. Look for the number of stored connections and the physical or software method used to switch between them. A dedicated button is usually easier to use than a shortcut you must remember, especially when the keyboard has already hidden other functions behind layers.

Wireless reliability depends on the keyboard, receiver placement, nearby radio activity, computer behavior, and power state. A receiver tucked behind a metal desktop computer or far from the keyboard may perform differently from one connected through a short extension cable. Battery claims require context. Manufacturers may measure runtime with particular lighting settings, polling behavior, or usage patterns. A compact keyboard with a number row isn't a replacement for a dedicated pad if you enter long strings of figures frequently; the layout and hand position are different.

Consider repair and replacement as well. Common keycap sizes, standard USB-C cables, replaceable switches, and onboard profiles can make a keyboard easier to maintain, but product support varies. Proprietary wireless receivers and discontinued configuration software can matter more over several years than a decorative feature you rarely use.

A sensible way to narrow the choice

Start by rejecting layouts that remove a key group you use constantly. If the number pad is central to your work, consider full-size, TKL plus a separate pad, or a compact board with an integrated pad. If you frequently use arrows and F-keys but rarely use navigation extras, a 75% model may fit. If arrows matter but F-keys don't, a 65% model is often the more natural compromise.

Next, test the exact secondary shortcuts for commands you use weekly. Check whether they require one hand or two, whether the Fn key is well placed, and whether the keyboard can lock the function layer. Then compare the physical dimensions and wireless behavior with your desk, computer ports, operating systems, and charging habits.

The smallest keyboard isn't automatically the best small-desk keyboard. Choose the layout that removes the least important physical space while preserving the keys and shortcuts you rely on without thought. For many users, that means starting with TKL or 75%, moving to 65% when arrows are enough, and choosing 60% only when its layers genuinely match the way they work.
