What to Do When a Computer Can't Eject an External Drive

An external drive that refuses to eject is usually reporting that something still has the drive open. The cause may be obvious, such as a document or photo you’re viewing, or it may be a background process such as indexing, antivirus scanning, cloud synchronisation, or backup software.
The safest response isn't to keep clicking Eject or immediately pull out the cable. First, give the computer a chance to finish its work and identify what is using the drive. In many cases, a few straightforward checks solve the problem without affecting your files.
Start with the simple causes
Save your work and close every window that may be connected to the external drive. This includes File Explorer or Finder windows showing the drive’s folders, as well as documents, photos, videos, music files, and archives stored on it. A file can remain in use even when its application window isn't obvious.
Pay particular attention to programs that preview or manage files. Photo catalogues, media players, PDF readers, office applications, compression tools, and file-management utilities may keep a file open in the background. Close the program itself rather than only closing the document.
Also check for transfers that are still running. Copying, moving, deleting, or renaming a large group of files may appear finished while the operating system is completing the final writes. Wait for any progress indicator to disappear. If the external drive has an activity light, continued blinking can be a useful clue, although the light doesn't always show every operation.
Try the eject command again after waiting briefly. On Windows, right-click the drive in File Explorer and choose Eject, or use the removable-device icon in the taskbar’s notification area. On macOS, click the eject symbol beside the drive in Finder or drag its icon to the Trash, which changes to an eject symbol. Linux desktop environments generally provide an Unmount or Eject option in the file manager.
Check the exact warning: If the operating system names an application or says the drive is busy, read that message before choosing another action. Menu names and the available options vary between Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, and their versions.
Look for background activity
If the drive still can't be ejected, background software is a likely explanation. Indexing services scan files so that searches can be faster. Antivirus tools may inspect newly connected files. Backup applications may be comparing the drive with another copy, and cloud-storage software may be synchronising folders stored on the external device.
You don't usually need to disable these services permanently. Instead, look for a progress indicator or notification and let the operation finish. If a backup or synchronisation job is active, use that program’s normal Pause, Stop, or Finish command. Stopping it through the application gives it a better opportunity to close files and record its current state.
On Windows, close applications from the taskbar and check the notification area for backup, antivirus, or synchronisation programs. If you know how to use Task Manager, it can show applications that remain open, but avoid ending unfamiliar system processes simply because they appear busy.
On macOS, check the Dock and menu bar for running applications and background utilities. Finder may be processing the drive, while Time Machine or another backup tool may still be reading it. Activity Monitor can help identify an unresponsive application, but force-quitting a process should be a later step, not the first one.
On Linux, the file manager, a backup utility, a media application, or an indexing service may still have a file open. Closing the relevant application is safer than unmounting the drive through a command-line force option when you aren't sure what is using it.
Check for a hidden file window or terminal session
A common cause is a program whose connection to the drive is easy to overlook. A terminal or Command Prompt window may have its current folder set to the external drive. Close that window or change to a folder on the computer’s internal drive, then try ejecting again.
Similarly, a file-selection window, upload dialog, or save dialog can keep the drive active even if the main application appears idle. Cancel any dialog that is browsing the external drive. If you opened a folder through a program rather than through Finder or File Explorer, return to the program’s main screen before trying again.
Some applications create temporary files or thumbnails while you browse. Give the system a little time after closing the application, particularly if the drive contains many photos, videos, or other large files. Repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting during this process can make it harder to tell whether the original task has completed.
Restart the file-management process
If the drive isn't being used for an important transfer and the eject command remains stuck, restarting the file-management process may clear a stale connection.
On Windows, restarting Windows Explorer through Task Manager can refresh File Explorer without restarting the entire computer. On macOS, you can relaunch Finder from its Dock menu or use the normal system controls to relaunch it. These actions affect the desktop and open file windows, so save work first.
A full computer restart is often the simplest option for a beginner. Choose Restart, wait for the computer to shut down and start again, and leave the external drive connected unless the operating system tells you to disconnect it. After the restart, wait until the desktop and any backup or security tools have finished loading, then eject the drive normally.
Restarting is preferable to forcing removal when you are unsure whether a write operation has completed. It may not solve a hardware or file-system problem, but it closes many temporary software connections in one step.
When is it safe to unplug the drive?
The ideal sequence is to use the operating system’s eject or unmount command and wait for confirmation that the drive can be removed. On some systems, the drive disappears from the file manager or a notification confirms that it is safe to disconnect. If the drive has an activity light, it should generally stop showing sustained activity, but the light alone isn't proof that every operation has ended.
Unplugging a drive while data is being written can leave a file incomplete or cause file-system errors. The risk is higher during a transfer, backup, database operation, or other task that changes many files. It is lower when no applications are open and the computer has clearly finished the operation, but “nothing visible is happening” isn't the same as a confirmed safe removal.
If the computer is completely unresponsive and you must shut it down, use the normal shutdown process if possible. Don't remove the cable while the computer is still writing. In an emergency, such as overheating hardware, a damaged cable, or an electrical hazard, protecting people and equipment takes priority; once the computer is stable, check the drive for errors before relying on it again.
If you have already unplugged it
Reconnect the drive and allow the computer to detect it fully. Don't immediately start moving large numbers of files. First check whether the folders open and whether recently changed files appear complete. If the operating system reports that the drive needs to be repaired, use its built-in disk-checking or first-aid feature after closing other applications.
A repair tool can correct file-system problems, but it shouldn't be treated as a substitute for a backup. If the drive makes unusual noises, repeatedly disconnects, becomes extremely slow, or shows missing files, stop using it for unnecessary work. Copy important recoverable data to another location before attempting repeated repairs.
If the drive is encrypted, the computer may also need time to unlock or close the encryption service. If it is shared between operating systems, file-system compatibility can add another source of errors. These situations don't automatically mean the drive is failing, but they make orderly unmounting more important.
Prevent the problem next time
Keep external drives out of active folders used by backup or synchronisation software unless you specifically want them included. Avoid opening the same large collection of files in several applications at once, and wait for transfers to finish before closing the computer or moving the drive.
A clear folder structure also helps. When you know which program is likely to be using a drive, it is easier to close the right application rather than ending random processes. Labeling drives can help too, especially when several removable devices are connected.
If eject failures become frequent, try a different USB port and cable, then test the drive on another computer. A damaged cable, loose connection, inadequate power, or failing drive can cause repeated disconnect and eject problems. Keep at least one separate backup of important files; an external drive shouldn't be the only place a valuable photo collection or document exists.
In most cases, the right recovery path is patient and methodical: close files, finish or pause background work, try ejecting again, and restart the computer if necessary. Force removal should be reserved for situations where normal shutdown or unmounting is impossible. After any unsafe disconnect, check the drive and make a backup before continuing with routine use.
