What to Do When a Computer Starts but Shows a Black Screen
A computer can appear powered on while the real problem is a cable, display setting, external device, failed startup, or operating system. I’ll show you what to prioritize first so you can restore the screen without creating extra risk or replacing working parts.
A computer that starts but shows a black screen can be failing in several different places. The fans may spin and indicator lights may turn on even when the display has no signal, the computer has stalled during startup, or the operating system is running but not producing a usable picture.
The safest approach is to begin with simple observations and reversible checks. Avoid opening the computer or repeatedly forcing it off until you know whether the problem is the display, the connection, the startup process, or the operating system.
Start by identifying what “starts” means
Press the power button once and watch and listen for a minute. Look for power lights, keyboard illumination, fan noise, startup sounds, or activity from the storage drive. On a laptop, check whether the charging light changes when you connect the charger. On a desktop, confirm that the monitor itself has power; its indicator may show whether it is receiving a signal.
Notice whether the screen is completely unlit or merely showing a very dark image. If you can faintly see a login screen or the manufacturer logo by shining a flashlight across the display at an angle, the computer may be working while the screen’s backlight or display hardware has failed. Don’t press hard on an LCD panel or continue using a damaged screen if it is cracked, hot, or producing an unusual smell.
If the computer was dropped, exposed to liquid, making repeated clicking sounds, or becoming unusually hot, stop at the basic power checks. Further testing can wait until important files are protected or a repair professional has assessed it.
Protect your files before deeper testing: If the computer eventually displays a picture, copy important documents before changing recovery settings, reinstalling the operating system, or repeatedly restarting it. A black screen can be a display problem, but it can also appear alongside storage or system failure.
Check the display and its connection
For a desktop, make sure the monitor’s power cable is firmly connected at both ends and that the monitor is set to the input used by the computer. Use the monitor’s buttons to open its own menu. If the menu appears, the monitor has power and can draw an image; the problem is more likely to be the computer, video cable, selected input, or the connection between them.
Unplug and reconnect the video cable at the monitor and computer. If the computer has more than one video port, confirm that the cable is connected to the port your setup is designed to use. Some desktops have video ports on both the motherboard and a separate graphics card, but only one group may be active in a particular configuration. If you’re unsure, try the port that was working previously rather than moving cables at random.
If available, try a different cable, monitor, or television that supports the computer’s output. Change only one item at a time so you know what fixed the problem. A second screen that works points toward the original monitor, cable, or input. A second screen that also stays black points more strongly toward the computer or its startup process.
Laptop users should disconnect docks, USB-C displays, projectors, and adapters for now. The laptop’s built-in display may be disabled or the image may be routed to an external screen. Use the laptop’s display-toggle key if it has one; the exact key and shortcut vary by model, and it may require holding the function key. Raising the brightness with the keyboard can also help if the screen was dimmed completely.
Remove simple causes before restarting
Disconnect nonessential accessories: USB drives, memory cards, printers, hubs, game controllers, external storage, and other devices. Leave the keyboard, mouse, power supply, and display connected. A faulty accessory or removable drive can interfere with startup, and reducing the setup makes the result easier to interpret.
If the computer is frozen, hold the power button until it shuts down, wait several seconds, and start it again with the accessories still disconnected. This is a forced shutdown, so it’s best used when the computer doesn't respond normally rather than as a routine fix. If the screen returns, reconnect devices one at a time and restart only if needed. The device connected just before the problem returns is a useful suspect.
On a laptop, disconnect the charger briefly after shutting down, then reconnect it and try again. If the battery is removable, you can remove it only when the design allows this without tools and the computer is fully off. Don't pry open a sealed battery compartment or continue if the battery is swollen.
Find out whether the computer reaches startup
A manufacturer logo, setup screen, or message such as “No boot device” is important evidence. It means the display can show an image and the computer is getting at least partway through its startup checks. A black screen that appears only after the logo or login screen suggests a different problem from a screen that never shows anything at all.
Try opening the computer’s firmware or startup menu by pressing the key shown on the first startup screen. Common choices include a function key, Delete, or Escape, but the correct key depends on the manufacturer and model. If the setup menu appears, the screen and much of the basic hardware are functioning. Exit without changing settings unless you know what a setting does.
If you can see a startup menu but the normal operating system produces a black screen, try the system’s built-in recovery or safe-start option. The route differs among Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, and computer manufacturers. Recovery tools can help undo a failed display-driver update or start with fewer drivers, but avoid choosing options that erase the drive unless you have a backup and intend to reinstall.
A black screen with a movable mouse pointer is another useful clue. The operating system may have loaded while the desktop shell, graphics driver, or user session has stalled. Wait briefly, try the keyboard shortcut for opening the system security or task screen, and disconnect external displays. If the task screen appears, restarting the desktop shell or rebooting normally may resolve a temporary software problem; the exact commands vary by operating system.
Use an external display as a diagnostic test
An external monitor or television can separate a laptop-screen problem from a broader startup problem. Connect it directly, select the correct input, and restart the laptop. If the external display works while the built-in screen remains black, the likely area is the laptop panel, backlight, display cable, or display-selection setting.
This test isn't conclusive on every model. Some laptops need a particular display shortcut, a compatible adapter, or a driver before an external screen works. Still, a working external image is a strong reason not to reinstall the operating system or replace the entire computer immediately.
For a desktop, the reverse test is useful: connect the monitor to another known-working device if possible. If the monitor shows an image from that device, return your attention to the computer, its video output, or its graphics hardware.
When hardware becomes the likely cause
If there is no image on the original or a known-working display, no startup logo, and no accessible firmware menu, the fault may involve the graphics hardware, memory, motherboard, power supply, or another internal component. The same is true if the computer repeatedly powers on and off, displays diagnostic light patterns, or produces beep codes. Record those patterns and look them up in the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model.
Desktop owners who are comfortable with hardware may reseat components, but beginners shouldn't treat this as the next automatic step. Turn the computer off, unplug it, and avoid touching internal parts unless you understand static precautions and the manufacturer’s design. Never work inside a powered computer, and don’t open a monitor or power supply; those components can retain dangerous electrical energy.
For a laptop, internal display cables and memory may require significant disassembly. A repair shop or manufacturer service channel is usually the safer choice, especially when the computer contains important files or is still covered by a warranty or service agreement. Keep notes about what you tested and whether the computer showed any logo, sound, light pattern, or external image.
Decide what to do next
If changing the input, cable, monitor, brightness, or external-device setup restores the image, continue using the computer cautiously and identify the original cause before assuming it is permanently fixed. Replace a failing cable or adapter, update display drivers only after the system is stable, and keep backups current.
If recovery mode works but normal startup doesn't, focus on recent changes such as an update, new driver, application, or display configuration. Use the operating system’s repair options in the least destructive order: restart, remove the recent change, restore a known working configuration, and only then consider a reset or reinstall. Confirm that important files are backed up before destructive options.
If no display works and the computer never reaches a startup menu, stop cycling through software fixes. At that point, a hardware diagnosis is more useful than changing operating-system settings. The key distinction is simple: a monitor or cable problem needs a display fix, a startup problem needs recovery or hardware troubleshooting, and an operating-system problem needs repair after the computer has proved it can produce an image.
