How to diagnose a phone that can't share its hotspot

If cellular data works on the phone, turn on the hotspot and look at what happens on the second device:
- The hotspot option is missing or unavailable: the carrier plan, account settings, or phone configuration may not allow tethering.
- The network doesn't appear: the hotspot may not be broadcasting, or the second device may not support the selected band or security mode.
- The device sees the hotspot but can't join: the password, saved network profile, or compatibility settings are likely involved.
- The device connects but has no internet: mobile data, carrier authorization, roaming, or a phone-side network problem may be responsible.
- The connection drops repeatedly: power management, weak cellular service, overheating, distance, or a device limit may be interrupting it.
This distinction matters. A laptop that can't see the hotspot needs a different remedy from one that connects successfully but reports “No internet.”
Check your travel service first: If you’re using a different SIM, eSIM, or roaming plan, confirm that cellular data and tethering are included for your current line and destination. Carrier policies, plan features, and account controls can change, so check your carrier’s current support page or account app rather than relying on an older plan description.
Confirm cellular data and carrier access
With Wi-Fi disabled on the phone, test more than one website or app. A single service might be unavailable for an unrelated reason. If nothing loads, check whether you have a usable signal and whether the correct line is selected for mobile data if the phone has dual SIMs.
Travel introduces several extra possibilities. Your phone may show signal while data roaming is disabled. A local data eSIM may be installed but not selected as the data line. Conversely, your regular home line may be selected even though it has no service in the country you’re visiting. Some plans also allow phone data but restrict tethering, or they apply separate limits to hotspot use.
Open the phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings and look for the selected data line, mobile data, and data roaming. The exact labels differ by operating system, manufacturer, and carrier. If the hotspot control is present but activating it produces an error, that is useful evidence: the phone may be contacting the carrier and being denied rather than failing to broadcast locally.
If you recently changed plans, installed an eSIM, moved a physical SIM, or crossed a border, restart the phone after confirming the correct data line. A restart can refresh registration with the network. It won’t bypass a plan restriction, but it can resolve a temporary failure to register the line correctly.
Check the hotspot settings and connection limit

Use a straightforward temporary password while diagnosing the connection. A long, unique password is still the right choice for normal use, but unusual punctuation or characters can expose compatibility problems with older operating systems or devices. Once the connection works, replace the temporary password with a strong one and turn the hotspot off when you’re finished.
Test compatibility before blaming the carrier
Newer phones may offer a choice between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz hotspot bands, along with newer wireless security options. A recent laptop may work well with the defaults, while an older travel router, tablet, or work computer may not see the network or may fail during authentication.
If the hotspot settings include a compatibility mode, enable it temporarily and test again. On some phones, this changes the broadcast to a more widely supported band or security configuration. It can reduce maximum speed, but speed is less important than obtaining a stable connection for email, maps, or a work session.
Keep the devices close together during the test and remove thick obstructions. You’re trying to eliminate range as a variable, not measure how far the hotspot can reach. If one device connects and another doesn't, compare their wireless support or try a different client. A successful connection from a second device suggests that the phone and carrier are functioning and that the original client needs attention.
For a laptop that connects but has no internet, temporarily disconnect any VPN, proxy, or manually configured DNS service. These tools can interfere with a newly assigned hotspot connection, especially when the laptop expects to reach a company network. If it is a managed work computer, your organization may also restrict tethering or require a particular VPN before allowing traffic.
Look for power, heat, and background restrictions
Hotspot use consumes more power than ordinary phone use because the phone is maintaining a cellular connection while operating a wireless access point. Low Power Mode, Battery Saver, or manufacturer-specific background controls may limit hotspot behavior, prevent the hotspot from staying active, or shut it down after a period without clients. The exact behavior varies by phone.
For a controlled test, connect the phone to power, turn off any battery-saving mode temporarily, and keep the screen or hotspot settings accessible. Don’t leave the phone in direct sun or under clothing while it is tethering. Heat can reduce performance or cause the phone to pause demanding radio activity.
Check for an inactivity timeout or automatic hotspot shutdown setting. Such a setting is useful when you’re traveling because it prevents an unattended phone from draining its battery, but it can look like a random failure if the client disconnects while idle. If the hotspot works immediately after you wake or unlock the phone, power management or an automatic timeout becomes more likely.
A weak cellular signal can produce a similar pattern. The second device may remain connected to the phone while the phone struggles to obtain data, creating the impression that Wi-Fi has failed. Move near a window or outdoors briefly, then test again. This is especially relevant in hotels, trains, convention centers, and rural areas where the phone may show only marginal service.
Try a different connection method
If Wi-Fi hotspot sharing remains unreliable, USB tethering can help you determine whether the problem is the wireless link or the phone’s cellular service. A compatible data cable and the appropriate phone setting are required; some cables provide power only. If USB tethering works while Wi-Fi hotspot doesn't, focus on band compatibility, saved wireless profiles, and hotspot radio settings.
Bluetooth tethering is another fallback, although it is generally slower and may require pairing first. It can be adequate for messages or light web use when Wi-Fi compatibility is the problem. These alternatives also help when you need a short, stable connection and the phone is close to the laptop.
If neither USB nor Bluetooth provides internet access, the issue is less likely to be the hotspot’s Wi-Fi broadcast. Recheck cellular data, the selected SIM, roaming, and the carrier’s tethering authorization. Test another client only after the phone’s own data connection is confirmed.
Reset network settings only at the end
A network-settings reset can clear corrupted Wi-Fi, cellular, VPN, and Bluetooth configuration. It may help after a system update, SIM change, or repeated unsuccessful network changes. However, it isn't a universal fix and it has consequences: saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords are removed, paired Bluetooth devices may need to be connected again, and some custom network settings may disappear.
Before using it, record important Wi-Fi passwords and make sure you know how to restore any work VPN or proxy settings. Then restart the phone and test the hotspot before making further changes. If the problem began immediately after an operating-system update, check the phone manufacturer’s current support information for known issues and available updates.
Review the reset’s consequences: Before clearing network settings on a travel or work phone, confirm what your model removes and whether you have the Wi-Fi passwords, eSIM details, and VPN information needed to reconnect. If the hotspot still fails after a network reset, stop repeating the same steps. A sensible recovery sequence
For a phone that can't share its hotspot, begin by proving that cellular data works on the phone without Wi-Fi. Then confirm the correct SIM or eSIM and whether your plan permits tethering, especially when roaming. Next, forget and rejoin the hotspot on the client, test a compatible band or compatibility mode, and remove possible interference from VPNs and proxies.
After that, test with the phone powered and cool, check for automatic shutdown behavior, and try USB tethering if available. Only then consider resetting network settings. This sequence preserves your configurations while narrowing the fault to the carrier, cellular service, phone, wireless compatibility, or client device. Once the connection is restored, use a strong password, keep the hotspot off when it isn’t needed, and monitor battery and heat during longer work sessions.
