What to Do When Your Phone Says It Has No SIM or Cellular Service

First, identify the message and timing
A “No SIM” or “SIM not detected” message usually means the phone can’t read a physical SIM card or doesn’t have an active eSIM configured. A phone showing “No Service,” “Searching,” or “SOS only” may recognize the SIM but be unable to register with a cellular network. That can result from poor coverage, a carrier outage, an account problem, network settings, or hardware trouble.
Think about what changed just before the failure. Did you drop the phone, get it wet, install a system update, switch carriers, travel, replace the SIM, or change your plan? A problem that began immediately after moving a physical SIM points toward the card or tray. A failure that affects several people on the same carrier points more strongly toward an outage.
If you’re in a basement, elevator, rural area, or large building, move outdoors or somewhere with a clear signal before doing more involved troubleshooting. Weak coverage normally produces a service message rather than “No SIM,” but testing in a different location helps separate a local signal problem from a phone or account problem.
Check today’s network status: Before replacing a SIM or resetting network settings, use your carrier’s official outage page or app over Wi-Fi, and ask someone nearby on the same network whether service is also down. Carrier status pages, coverage, and account requirements can change, so confirm them for your location.
Restart the connection before changing anything
Turn Airplane Mode on, wait about 15 seconds, and turn it off again. This makes the phone disable and re-enable its cellular radios without changing your account or deleting saved information. If the phone was stuck after moving between Wi-Fi, roaming, or a weak-signal area, this may be enough.
Then restart the phone normally. A restart can clear a temporary modem or operating-system fault, particularly after an update or a long period without rebooting. Once it starts again, wait a minute or two for the phone to register with the network. Avoid repeatedly turning settings on and off while the phone is still searching; give each change a little time to take effect.
If the phone has a battery-saving mode, check whether it has restricted mobile data. That setting won’t usually cause a “No SIM” message, but it can make a connected phone appear unable to use cellular internet. Also confirm that the correct cellular line is enabled if the phone supports two lines.
Check a physical SIM carefully
If your phone uses a removable SIM, power it off before taking the card out. Locate the SIM tray using the phone’s tray tool or a suitable eject pin, and note the card’s orientation. Don’t force the tray or insert a sharp object into a microphone hole; those openings can look similar on some phones.
Remove the SIM and inspect it in good light. Look for cracks, bent edges, corrosion, deep scratches, or dirt on the metal contacts. If necessary, wipe the card gently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Don’t use water, household cleaner, or abrasive materials, and don’t touch the contacts more than necessary.
Check the tray as well. It should be dry, flat, and free of lint. Reinsert the SIM in the exact orientation shown by the tray, close it completely, and restart the phone. An eSIM has no removable card. Its cellular plan is stored electronically, so removing and reinserting a physical SIM won’t fix an eSIM that has been disabled, deleted, or incorrectly configured. Make sure the line is turned on and selected for calls, messages, and mobile data as appropriate.
The exact menu names vary between iPhone and Android phones, and between manufacturers. Look for options such as SIMs, Mobile network, Cellular plans, or Manage SIMs. If the line is missing entirely, the eSIM profile may not be installed. Your carrier may need to issue a new activation process, QR code, or in-app setup; don’t guess at an activation code or delete a working eSIM just to start over.
On a dual-SIM phone, confirm that the intended line is active. A phone can show a service problem for one line while the other continues to work. Check which line is assigned to mobile data and whether data switching is enabled. If you recently changed carriers, verify that the phone is unlocked and supports the new carrier’s network and frequency bands.
Verify the account and network connection
Sign in to your carrier account over Wi-Fi and check that the line is active. Look for a suspended account, an unpaid balance, a failed payment, a plan change waiting for activation, a pending number transfer, or a roaming restriction. These details are account-specific and may not be visible from the phone itself.
If you recently upgraded, transferred your number, replaced a phone, or changed a SIM, activation may not have completed. The carrier may need the phone’s IMEI, EID, or SIM number to finish setup. You can usually find these in the phone’s About settings or by using the phone’s built-in account and cellular information screens. Share those identifiers only through the carrier’s official support channel.
Confirm activation and compatibility: When contacting your carrier, ask them to verify that your exact line, SIM or eSIM, phone identifier, and network access are active. Also ask whether there’s an outage or a current requirement for a replacement SIM, an unlocked device, or a plan change.
If the phone shows signal bars but calls fail, the issue may involve account provisioning rather than signal reception. If it shows “SOS only,” emergency calling may still be available depending on local network conditions, but ordinary calls, texts, and data aren't working normally. Don’t assume that “SOS” means your regular carrier service is active.
Install updates, but don’t erase the phone first
Check for a pending operating-system update while connected to Wi-Fi. Updates can include modem, carrier, and compatibility fixes, although an update isn’t guaranteed to solve a service failure. Install it only when the phone has adequate battery and a reliable connection.
Some phones also install carrier settings updates separately or apply them automatically. If the phone presents an official carrier update, read the prompt and install it if appropriate. Avoid configuration profiles, “signal booster” apps, or websites that promise to repair service by changing hidden settings; they can create security and connectivity problems.
If the basic checks fail, consider Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, VPN-related settings, and some cellular preferences, but it normally doesn't erase photos, apps, or personal files. Because the exact result varies by phone, review the confirmation screen first and make sure you know your Wi-Fi passwords. A network reset is more useful for persistent connection or registration problems than for a physically undetected SIM.
A factory reset should be a last resort, and it is unlikely to repair a broken SIM reader, damaged antenna, inactive account, or carrier outage. Back up the phone and consult the carrier or manufacturer before taking that step.
When the problem points to hardware
Hardware becomes more likely when the phone stopped detecting every compatible SIM, the tray is bent, the device suffered impact or liquid exposure, or cellular service fails in multiple locations after the account and SIM have been confirmed. Other clues include repeated SIM errors, a phone that can't read its own cellular identifiers, or service that disappears whenever the device is moved.
Liquid damage can continue to worsen even if the phone appears to work. Power it off if it is wet, disconnect accessories, and follow the manufacturer’s support guidance. Don’t heat it with a hair dryer or insert paper and tools into the SIM slot. If the phone is swollen, unusually hot, or physically damaged, stop using it and seek qualified service.
Contact the carrier first when the SIM or eSIM fails in another phone, the account isn't active, or activation is incomplete. Contact the phone manufacturer or a reputable repair provider when a known-working SIM fails in your phone, the tray or reader is damaged, or the carrier confirms that the line and device are correctly provisioned. If the phone is under warranty or covered by insurance, check those options before paying for repair.
The sensible order is to test the signal, toggle Airplane Mode, restart, inspect the physical SIM or eSIM line, confirm the account and outage status, and then use a network reset if the symptoms fit. A controlled SIM swap can save the most time because it separates a carrier or SIM problem from a phone problem. Once you know which side is failing, you can replace the card, restore activation, or arrange repair without wiping the device unnecessarily.
