If you regularly compare documents, keep reference material open while writing, monitor a chat window, or use a spreadsheet alongside another application, a second display can reduce the need to switch between windows. Students may use one screen for a lecture or reading and the other for notes, provided the workspace and course requirements allow it.
It won’t automatically make a small table more comfortable, though. A second screen takes up physical space, requires another cable or two, and can be difficult to position beside a laptop in a crowded café, hotel room, library desk, or shared kitchen. If your work is mostly email, writing, or browser-based tasks that fit comfortably on one display, the extra equipment may not justify the inconvenience.
Consider how often you work away from home and how long those sessions last. Portable models vary significantly, and advertised brightness figures don’t tell the entire story, but you should treat a dim display as a serious limitation rather than a minor specification. Some support only one or two viewing angles, which may not work beside a laptop with a tall screen or a low keyboard position.

Ergonomics become more important during long sessions. Ideally, the second display should be close to the height and distance of your main screen, with minimal twisting of your neck. A portable monitor placed flat on a table may be acceptable for a short task, but hours of looking down or sideways can leave you uncomfortable. Don’t overlook the keyboard and pointing device. Troubleshooting the problems that make portable monitors feel unreliable

Hubs can introduce power or compatibility problems that are difficult to identify at a glance.

Treat the portable monitor as part of a complete workspace rather than an isolated screen.
