How to prepare technology for wildfire smoke and poor air quality

Wildfire smoke can damage electronics through fine particles, residue, heat, and unstable power, while rushed cleaning can make matters worse. I’ll explain the few protective steps that matter most, from filtration and storage to safe shutdown and recovery.

Wildfire smoke is a problem for technology in several different ways. Fine particles can enter computers, game consoles, chargers, and other devices through cooling openings. Smoke residue can settle on connectors and circuit boards, while heat, ash, power interruptions, and hurried handling create separate risks. You don’t need to seal every device in your home, but a small amount of preparation can reduce exposure and make recovery easier.

The minimalist approach is to protect the air, protect the power, and protect the devices you’d have the most difficulty replacing. Your own safety and evacuation instructions always come first. Electronics can be replaced; delaying an evacuation to unplug or pack them isn't a sensible trade-off.

Start with the air, not the devices

The most useful protection is reducing the amount of smoky air that enters your home. When outdoor air quality is poor, keep windows and exterior doors closed as much as practical. Turn off systems that intentionally bring in outdoor air, such as a fresh-air intake or whole-house ventilation mode, unless your building or equipment instructions say otherwise. Avoid using window fans or other exhaust fans that pull replacement air through gaps around the building.

Your heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system can help if it recirculates indoor air and uses a compatible filter. A higher-efficiency filter, often identified by a MERV rating, may capture more fine particles, but not every system can handle the added airflow resistance. Check the equipment manual or ask a qualified HVAC professional before moving to a filter that is substantially more restrictive. A filter that causes poor airflow or freezes an air conditioner isn't an improvement.

A portable air cleaner with a properly sized particle filter can be a simpler option for a bedroom, office, or room where sensitive equipment is located. Place it where air can move freely around the intake and outlet, and keep the filter clean enough for the unit to maintain airflow. An air cleaner doesn't remove every smoke-related pollutant, and it can't compensate for open windows, heavy leaks, or indoor smoke sources. Avoid relying on ozone-generating devices; ozone is itself an indoor air pollutant and isn't a general-purpose electronics solution.

Check today’s air and utility guidance: Before changing ventilation settings or operating equipment during an active smoke event, check your local air-quality service, building guidance, and utility notices. In the United States, this may include AirNow and local emergency management; in Canada, check the applicable provincial or territorial air-quality service and emergency alerts. Conditions, outage instructions, and evacuation orders can change quickly.

Protect only what matters most

You can waste time and storage space trying to protect every cable and appliance. Instead, make a short priority list. Start with devices that contain irreplaceable data, devices needed for communication, and equipment that would be expensive or difficult to replace. That usually means phones, laptops, backup drives, networking equipment, medical-related technology, and chargers for essential devices.

Move small priority items into a clean, dry interior room when smoke is present. Keep them away from windows, exterior doors, garages, patios, and areas where ash may settle. If you have a clean lidded container or storage tote, use it for powered-off devices and accessories. Don’t place warm equipment in an airtight container; let it cool first, and keep moisture from being trapped inside.

For equipment that must remain in use, provide a clean path for airflow. Don’t drape fabric or plastic over a running computer, router, television, or power strip. Covering a device may block cooling and create an overheating risk. If temporary protection is necessary while a device is completely powered off and cool, a loose clean cover is safer than sealing it while operating. Remove the cover before turning the device back on.

Prepare for interruptions before they happen

Smoke events can coincide with planned shutoffs, damaged infrastructure, or voltage disturbances. A simple backup plan is more useful than a large collection of accessories. Keep essential phones and battery packs charged, and store the correct cables with them. If your internet equipment is important for receiving alerts or working remotely, decide whether it truly needs backup power; a small battery backup may keep a modem and router running, but only if their power requirements are compatible.

A surge protector can help with some transient voltage events, but it doesn't keep equipment running during an outage and it isn't a substitute for a backup power system. An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, can provide short-term power and allow an orderly shutdown. Check its load rating, battery condition, outlet arrangement, and runtime rather than assuming any UPS will support any computer.

If you use a generator, follow the generator and local emergency-safety instructions carefully. Operate fuel-burning generators outdoors and well away from doors, windows, and ventilation openings; never use one inside a home, garage, basement, or enclosed porch. Connecting a generator to household wiring generally requires the proper transfer equipment and a qualified installation. Don't improvise with a cable that can energize circuits unexpectedly.

Before an outage, save work and shut down nonessential electronics normally. Unplugging everything isn't always necessary, especially if evacuation or personal safety is the immediate concern. If you do unplug devices, hold the plug rather than pulling the cord, and leave enough space around power strips and adapters for them to stay cool.

Keep batteries and chargers in a safer place

Lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops, tablets, power banks, cameras, and mobility equipment should be kept away from excessive heat and direct sun. During a smoke event, don’t charge a device on a bed, sofa, or pile of clothing. Use an intact charger and cable on a hard, stable surface, and stop using equipment that becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells abnormal, or shows other physical damage.

A damaged or swollen battery shouldn't be squeezed, punctured, placed in ordinary household recycling, or repeatedly connected to a charger to “see if it still works.” Move away from it and follow local fire-department or hazardous-waste guidance. Current disposal and transport rules vary, particularly for larger batteries, so verify the local instructions rather than putting one in a curbside bin.

Keep fuel, candles, and other ignition sources separate from electronics and battery storage. If an evacuation is ordered, take only items you can safely carry after essential medications, documents, people, and pets are accounted for.

Clean carefully after exposure

Wait until conditions are safe and outdoor air is suitable for opening windows or doing dusty work. If ash or smoke residue is visible, don’t immediately power up the device to check whether it works. First move it to a clean area, disconnect all power, and let it cool if it has been running.

For external surfaces, use a clean, dry, soft cloth. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for screens, keyboards, camera lenses, and coated surfaces. If a slightly damp cloth is permitted, apply moisture to the cloth rather than spraying the device, and keep liquid away from openings, seams, switches, and charging ports. Never clean a connected device with a wet cloth.

A vacuum designed to contain fine particles can be useful for loose ash on surrounding surfaces, but avoid forcing debris deeper into vents. Compressed air may spread contaminated dust through the room or push it farther inside a device. Blowing into a laptop, console, or desktop computer is therefore not a complete cleaning method. Internal cleaning is best handled by a qualified repair service, especially when residue has entered a power supply or other high-voltage area.

Smoke exposure can leave an odor even when a device appears clean. Don’t use household sprays, solvents, or ozone treatments to mask it. Those products can damage plastics, coatings, seals, and electronics. If a device was exposed to heavy smoke, ash, water used for firefighting, or extreme heat, leave it powered off and ask the manufacturer or a reputable repair provider about inspection.

Check the devices before returning them to service

After the air has improved and the device is clean and dry, inspect the cable, plug, enclosure, vents, and ports. Look for ash, soot, melted plastic, corrosion, cracked insulation, swollen batteries, or signs that water entered the equipment. If any of those are present, don’t connect the device to power just to test it.

For equipment that passes a visual check, reconnect it in a well-ventilated, clean area and monitor it during the first use. Unusual heat, buzzing, sparking, repeated restarts, burning smells, fan problems, or error messages are reasons to shut it down and disconnect it. A device that starts normally may still have contamination inside, so pay attention to changes over the following days.

Before a smoke season, make sure important data exists in more than one place. A backup drive stored beside the computer can be lost with the computer, smoke damage, or a rushed evacuation. Keep at least one backup separate from the main device, and use encrypted cloud or off-site storage when it suits your privacy and budget. Also save important account recovery information and keep a few essential phone numbers available offline.

A small preparation plan is enough

For most households, the essentials are straightforward: maintain clean indoor air, keep a compatible filter or portable purifier ready, charge essential batteries, protect a few priority devices, and know how you’ll handle an outage. Store a clean container, soft cloths, spare charging cables, and a reliable backup medium where you can reach them without searching through smoky or dusty areas.

During an event, follow air-quality and emergency instructions, reduce unnecessary device use, and keep electronics cool and dry. Afterward, clean gradually and inspect before reconnecting anything questionable. This approach avoids both extremes: leaving valuable equipment exposed and buying a large collection of products that may not help. The best protection is usually a cleaner room, sensible power management, and knowing when a damaged device needs professional attention.
