Recover a Computer That Is Stuck in a Restart Loop
I’ll show you how to avoid the common mistake of repeatedly forcing a computer to restart while it is looping, from disconnecting accessories and opening recovery tools to choosing repair options without risking your files unnecessarily.
A computer that restarts before you can reach the desktop is usually giving you too little time to diagnose the cause. The loop may follow an update, a new driver, a failed application, a damaged system file, or a hardware problem. The safest response isn't to keep restarting it indefinitely, but to narrow the problem down in stages.
The names and keyboard shortcuts differ between Windows PCs and Macs, but the priorities are similar: remove variables, reach the built-in recovery environment, try the least destructive repair first, and stop before a reset or reinstall erases information you still need.
Start with the simplest causes
Disconnect everything that isn't required to start the computer. Remove USB hubs, flash drives, external hard drives, printers, memory-card readers, docks, game controllers, and other accessories. Leave the power adapter, built-in display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad connected. A faulty peripheral or a drive that the computer is trying to boot from can create a restart loop that looks like an operating-system failure.
If the computer is hot, smells unusual, makes repeated clicking noises, or shows signs of liquid damage, turn it off and disconnect power when it is safe to do so. Repeatedly starting a failing drive or powering damaged hardware can make recovery more difficult. A desktop with a removable power cable can be disconnected after shutdown; with a laptop, use the normal power control unless it is completely unresponsive.
If the machine is frozen during startup, hold its power button until it switches off, wait several seconds, then try one clean start with accessories still disconnected. Avoid doing this repeatedly. A forced shutdown is sometimes necessary to regain control, but it should be a way into recovery tools, not the main troubleshooting method.
Check the right recovery instructions: Before using a shortcut, confirm whether your computer is a Windows PC or a Mac and whether it uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor. Microsoft and Apple update recovery steps and screen names, and the manufacturer’s support page can clarify model-specific keys.
Reach Windows recovery tools
Windows often opens the Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE, after it detects several interrupted starts. If it doesn't appear, turn the computer on and, when the Windows logo or spinning indicator appears, hold the power button to turn it off. Repeat this interruption only until Windows enters automatic repair, then allow the recovery screen to load. On some systems, the recovery process may take a few minutes.
Choose Advanced options rather than immediately selecting a reset. The useful tools are generally under Troubleshoot and Advanced options, though wording can vary by Windows version and manufacturer. If the computer asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you may need to retrieve it from the Microsoft account or organization that manages the device before some repairs can continue. Don't guess at the key or delete encrypted partitions to get around the request.
The first options to consider are:
- Startup Repair: Attempts to correct problems that prevent Windows from starting. It is relatively low risk, although it can't fix every hardware or driver fault.
- Startup Settings and Safe Mode: Starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If Safe Mode works, remove a recently installed driver or application, undo a recent configuration change, or copy important files before trying more involved repairs.
- Uninstall Updates: Useful when the loop began immediately after a recent quality or feature update. Removing an update can restore startup, but it also removes that update’s fixes until Windows installs a later one.
- System Restore: Returns system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents. It is only helpful if a suitable restore point exists, and applications or drivers installed afterward may need to be reinstalled.
- Command Prompt: A more advanced option for people who know which repair commands and drive letters apply to their installation. In recovery mode, the Windows drive may not be
C:, so commands aimed at the wrong volume can waste time or alter the wrong files.
If Safe Mode starts successfully, don't assume the problem is solved. Save or copy important documents first. Then check what changed immediately before the loop: a driver, antivirus product, update, storage device, or newly installed program is a useful lead. Restart normally after one change at a time so you can identify what helped.
Reach Mac recovery tools
On a Mac with Apple silicon, shut it down if possible, then press and hold the power button until Loading startup options or the startup-options screen appears. Select Options and continue to enter macOS Recovery. On an Intel-based Mac, start or restart it and immediately hold Command-R until the Apple logo or another startup screen appears. If the shortcut doesn't work, a wired keyboard or the Mac’s built-in keyboard may be more reliable than a wireless one.
macOS Recovery normally provides Disk Utility, reinstall options, and access to other recovery functions. In Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices if necessary, select the relevant volume or internal storage device, and run First Aid as directed. First Aid can repair some file-system problems, but repeated errors, an unmounted drive, or a drive that disappears from Disk Utility points toward a possible storage failure rather than a simple startup setting.
Mac Safe Mode is useful for separating a basic startup problem from software that loads during a normal start. On Apple silicon, use startup options, select the startup volume, hold Shift, and choose Continue in Safe Mode. On an Intel Mac, start or restart while holding Shift. If Safe Mode works, back up important files and investigate recently installed login items, system extensions, drivers, or applications before attempting a normal restart.
If macOS Recovery offers to reinstall macOS, treat that as a later repair step, not the first choice. Reinstalling over the existing system generally aims to preserve user data, but interruptions, an already failing drive, encryption complications, or an incorrect disk selection can change the risk. A current backup is the sensible protection before proceeding.
Choose the least destructive repair first
The best repair depends on when the loop began and what the computer can still do. A loop that started after connecting a dock or external drive calls for disconnection and a clean test. One that began after an update makes update removal or System Restore on Windows, or Safe Mode and recent-software review on a Mac, more relevant. A loop accompanied by storage errors, unusual noises, crashes in recovery, or failure to detect the internal drive deserves hardware attention before repeated software repairs.
Don't select Reset this PC, erase a Mac disk, format a partition, or perform a clean operating-system installation merely because the option is visible. These choices can remove applications, settings, and personal files. Even options described as keeping files may leave you without programs, local accounts, or files stored in unexpected locations. Confirm exactly what will be removed and where your backup is before accepting.
If you can reach Safe Mode, Recovery, a file browser, or another computer connected to the affected drive, copy irreplaceable documents, photos, and project files first. Don't rely on a backup that has never been tested. If the drive is failing, prioritize the most important data and avoid repeatedly scanning or repairing it; a professional recovery service may be safer than experimenting with destructive tools.
Know when to stop
Stop troubleshooting and seek qualified help when the computer can't reach recovery tools, the internal drive is missing, BitLocker or FileVault credentials are unavailable, repair tools report worsening disk errors, or the files exist only on the affected machine. Business computers may also be managed by an employer or school, in which case an administrator may control encryption keys, recovery policies, or approved repair methods.
You can usually continue with software troubleshooting when recovery tools load consistently, the storage device is detected without errors, and you have a usable backup. Make one change at a time and record what you tried. That prevents a series of resets and forced shutdowns from hiding the original cause.
The sensible path through a restart loop is controlled escalation: disconnect accessories, enter the correct recovery environment, try startup repair or Safe Mode, protect your files, and only then consider reinstalling the operating system. If the loop returns after a repair, or the storage hardware behaves inconsistently, treat that as evidence of a deeper problem rather than an invitation to repeat the same procedure.
