How to Connect a Game Controller to a Phone and Fix Common Pairing Problems

Check compatibility before troubleshooting

Look up the controller’s support information and the phone’s current operating-system documentation before assuming they work together. Many modern controllers use Bluetooth as a standard input device, but not every controller supports phones, and some offer different behavior depending on whether they are connected to a console, computer, or mobile device.

The controller may also have several connection modes. A console-specific wireless mode, a Bluetooth mode, and a USB mode aren't necessarily interchangeable. Before pairing, charge the controller or install fresh batteries. When the controller connects but buttons do nothing

A successful Bluetooth or USB connection doesn't guarantee universal game support. Some mobile games accept only touch controls, some support controllers only during gameplay, and others support a limited set of menus or modes. A game may recognize movement but ignore menu navigation, triggers, vibration, or special buttons.

Check the game’s settings for a controller, gamepad, input, or key-mapping section. You may need to enable controller input, choose a layout, or assign actions manually. The phone’s system may recognize standard buttons, while the game expects a different layout or doesn't expose remapping at all.

Some games distinguish between a supported controller and a generic Bluetooth gamepad. A controller that works in one game may therefore fail in another without any change to the phone.
