When a cracked charging cable is unsafe to keep using

A cracked charging cable can fail through exposed insulation, heat, intermittent power, or connector strain. I’ll explain how these warning signs fit together, when to stop using a cable, and how to replace and dispose of it responsibly.

A damaged charging cable can look like a minor annoyance until it becomes hot, stops charging reliably, or exposes the wiring inside. The difficult part is deciding whether the damage is cosmetic or a sign that continued use could harm the cable, device, charger, or you.

The safest approach is to treat cracking, heat, and intermittent charging as related warning signs rather than isolated inconveniences. Once a cable’s outer protection or connector support is failing, replacing it is usually more sensible than trying to make it last a little longer.

What a cracked cable is telling you

Most charging cables have an outer jacket that protects internal insulation, shielding, and power or data conductors. The jacket also helps the cable bend gradually instead of concentrating movement at one small point. Cracks, splits, or flattened sections weaken both functions.

A small mark on the outside isn’t automatically dangerous. A shallow scuff that doesn’t open when the cable is gently flexed may be cosmetic. The risk increases when you can see a split, inner insulation, braided shielding, colored wires, or metal. Damage is also more concerning near either connector, where repeated bending puts stress on the conductors.

Don’t pull, twist, or repeatedly bend the cable to test it. That can turn limited damage into a break. Inspect it with the charger disconnected from the wall and the device, using ordinary room lighting. If the damage is difficult to judge, replacement is the low-cost, low-risk choice.

Check the cable before the next charge: Unplug it from both ends and look for exposed material, spreading cracks, melted spots, bent connector parts, or damage that worsens when the cable is moved normally. If you find any of these signs, stop using the cable rather than testing it under load.

Signs you should stop using it immediately

Visible conductors are the clearest reason to retire a cable. So are melted plastic, scorch marks, a burnt smell, or a connector that feels unusually loose or hot. These signs suggest more than ordinary wear and can indicate excessive resistance, a poor connection, mechanical damage, or a problem elsewhere in the charging setup.

Heat deserves attention even when the cable looks intact. A cable may feel slightly warm during charging, especially while a device is drawing substantial power, but it shouldn’t become uncomfortably hot to hold. Heat concentrated at one connector is particularly suspicious. Disconnect the cable and let everything cool rather than continuing to charge while you investigate.

Stop using the cable if charging starts and stops when the cable is moved, if the device repeatedly switches between charging and not charging, or if the connector only works in one position. Intermittent charging can result from lint in a device port, a failing port, a faulty charger, or a damaged cable. It isn’t proof that the cable is the only problem, but it is a good reason not to keep relying on it.

A cable that feels soft, kinked, crushed, or stretched near the plug can also be internally damaged even if its outer jacket hasn’t split. Internal conductors may be broken or partly separated, creating a connection that works only under certain conditions.

Why intermittent charging matters

When a connection is poor, electrical resistance can rise at the damaged area or connector. The device may receive unstable power, charge more slowly, or repeatedly reconnect. The extra resistance can produce heat, which can worsen the damage and make the connection less reliable.

Modern phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices negotiate charging power with their chargers. A cable that works for a low-power accessory may not be suitable for a laptop or a high-wattage phone charger. Damage can make an otherwise appropriate cable unreliable, while an unsuitable cable can create charging problems without being cracked.

You can narrow down the cause without taking risks. Try a known-good, compatible cable with the same charger and device. If charging works normally, retire the damaged cable. If the problem continues, try a compatible charger and inspect the device’s charging port for visible lint or debris. Don’t insert metal objects or force anything into the port.

If multiple known-good cables behave the same way, the issue may be the charger, outlet, device port, battery, or charging circuitry. Continued heat, a burning odor, swelling, or smoke calls for immediate disconnection if you can do so safely. Don’t use a device or charger that shows those signs until it has been assessed or replaced.

Connector strain is often the first failure point

The section where the cable meets a plug bends every time you connect, disconnect, or use the device while it’s charging. If the strain relief—the thicker flexible section supporting the connector—has split, slid out of position, or become rigid, the cable is more likely to fail internally.

A connector that wiggles excessively, has bent metal, or no longer seats fully shouldn't be forced into a port. A poor fit can make contact only at certain angles and may put pressure on the device’s port. For USB-C and other reversible connectors, both ends should insert smoothly without unusual resistance. Never turn a plug around repeatedly to find a position that charges.

Damage can also result from using a cable while it is sharply folded under a phone, trapped beneath furniture, or pulled sideways by the device’s weight. Those habits don’t make a cracked cable safe again, and they can damage a replacement as well.

Don’t treat tape as a permanent repair

Electrical tape, heat-shrink tubing, and cable sleeves can cover a cosmetic split, but they don’t restore damaged conductors or a failing connector. Wrapping a cable may also hide heat, fraying, or spreading damage during later inspections. Household tape is especially unreliable because it can loosen, leave adhesive in a port, or give a false sense of security.

A cable with exposed wiring, heat damage, intermittent charging, or connector strain should be replaced, not repaired for continued charging. Cutting off a damaged end and fitting a new connector is also not a sensible household repair for most people. The result may have incorrect wiring, inadequate insulation, poor strain relief, or no protection for the charging power involved.

If you need to recover data from a device and the cable still works intermittently, use a known-good replacement instead of repeatedly repositioning the damaged one. If the device has a safe, supported wireless-charging option, that may be a temporary way to avoid a damaged port or cable while you obtain the correct replacement—but it doesn’t make a hot or damaged charger safe to leave connected.

How to choose a suitable replacement

Match the replacement to both ends of the connection and the power your device needs. Check whether you need USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C, USB-C to Lightning, or another connector. A cable can fit physically and still be unsuitable for the charging speed, laptop power, data transfer, or video function you expect.

For higher-power charging, use a cable whose stated power capability meets or exceeds the charger and device requirements. For USB-C equipment, look for clear power and data specifications rather than relying on the connector shape or claims such as “fast” by themselves. If your device manufacturer specifies a cable type or rating, follow that guidance.

Buy from a reputable manufacturer or retailer and avoid cables with vague specifications, visibly poor molding, loose connectors, or implausibly broad claims. A longer cable can be convenient, but extra length and thinner construction may affect durability or performance. Braided coverings can resist some surface wear, but they aren’t proof that the conductors or connectors are better made.

Use the new cable in a way that reduces strain: support the device while it charges, unplug by gripping the connector rather than pulling the cord, and avoid tight loops or sharp bends. Keep cables away from heat, moisture, pets, and places where they can be pinched.

What to do with the damaged cable

Disconnect the cable from the wall and devices, then keep it out of service while you arrange a replacement. Don’t leave a damaged cable plugged in where someone might use it accidentally. If it has melted sections, exposed conductors, or a burnt smell, handle it as little as possible and don’t put it near paper, fabric, or other easily ignited materials.

Charging cables are commonly accepted through electronics-recycling programs, but collection rules differ by location. Some retailers, local waste facilities, and community events accept small electronics and cables; ordinary household trash may be the only permitted option in some areas. Check your local waste or recycling program for current instructions, especially for a cable with visible damage.

Confirm local disposal options: Before throwing away the old cable, check your city, county, retailer, or electronics-recycling program for its current rules. Requirements vary, and damaged cables may need different handling from ordinary recyclable packaging.

The practical decision

Replace a cable when its jacket is split, its internal material is visible, its connector is damaged or loose, or it charges intermittently. Replace it immediately if it becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, shows melting or scorch marks, or causes the device to repeatedly connect and disconnect.

If you’re seeing charging trouble with a cable that looks fine, test with a compatible known-good cable and charger, then inspect the device port without probing it. That separates a worn cable from a problem in the charger or device. In either case, don’t keep using a cable that requires a particular angle, repeated wiggling, or a temporary wrap to work. A correctly rated replacement is usually cheaper and safer than trying to extract a few more charges from a failing one.
